The second-generation Mazda 3 paired with the 1.6 MZ-CD diesel uses a PSA-developed DV6 engine shared with Ford, Peugeot, Citroen, Volvo, and Mini. It offers good fuel economy (around 5 l/100 km combined) in a well-built, fun-to-drive compact. The engine is a known quantity with well-documented weak points, most of which revolve around the turbo oil feed system, injector sealing, and DPF maintenance. The BL generation improved ride quality and interior over the BK predecessor, but the diesel engine choice remains the same proven-but-fussy unit.· more· less

Turbo oil feed sieve clogs DPF needs Eolys additive top-ups
Buy if: You do regular motorway driving, can verify turbo and injector health, and find one with frequent oil changes documented in the service history.
Avoid if: The car was mostly used for short urban trips, you cannot confirm the Eolys additive has been topped up, or the turbo oil feed line has never been serviced.

Common Problems
Manageable if serviced frequently, but the DV6 engine demands attention
The 1.6 MZ-CD is a widely used diesel engine with a well-understood failure chain: injector seal leaks contaminate the oil, contaminated oil clogs the turbo feed sieve, and the turbo fails. Breaking this chain through frequent oil changes (every 10,000 km), prompt injector seal replacement, and proactive turbo oil feed cleaning can keep running costs reasonable. The DPF system with Eolys additive adds a maintenance item that many owners overlook. Cars with documented service history showing regular oil changes and Eolys top-ups are significantly lower risk than those without.

Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Takata airbag inflator (2009-2013 models, expanded recall) Verify completed
Tailgate/liftgate support strut corrosion (2010-2013 hatchback models) Verify completed
Engine harness protector clip (2010-2011 models) Verify if applicable
Contact a Mazda dealer with the VIN to verify all outstanding recalls have been completed. The Takata airbag recall is a safety-critical item that must be confirmed before purchase.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (3 years / 100,000 km) Expired on all used Mazda 3 BL models
Rust perforation warranty (12 years) Expired or expiring on 2009-2013 models
Extended warranty availability Third-party warranties available; verify diesel-specific exclusions
All Mazda 3 BL models are well outside their original 3-year factory warranty. Mazda's 12-year rust perforation warranty may have recently expired or is expiring soon depending on the specific production date. Any third-party extended warranty should be checked carefully for diesel-specific exclusions (turbo, DPF, injectors are often excluded on older diesel cars).
