2008-2018 · 1.3 JTDM / JTDM-2 (85-95 hp) Fiat MultiJet 4-cylinder turbodiesel

Alfa Romeo's compact supermini powered by the widely-used Fiat 1.3 MultiJet diesel. This engine is found across dozens of Fiat, Opel, and Suzuki models, which means parts are plentiful and specialists know it well. The MiTo offers Italian styling in a small, economical package. Early cars used an M20 six-speed gearbox, while post-2010 models switched to a more robust C510 five-speed.

Proven MultiJet engine, parts widely available Excellent fuel economy (4-5 L/100 km)
Electric power steering column failures DPF and EGR clog with city driving
Buy if: You drive regular longer journeys, can verify the timing chain and steering column are healthy, and want an economical Italian diesel.
Avoid if: You mainly drive short urban trips under 10 km (DPF will clog) or need a car that never visits a workshop.

Common Problems
Reliable engine, but needs the right driving pattern and regular maintenance
The Fiat 1.3 MultiJet in the MiTo is fundamentally robust and examples exceeding 200,000 km without major engine work exist when properly maintained. However, the engine is poorly suited to short-trip urban driving, which clogs the DPF and fouls the EGR valve. The MiTo-specific EPS steering column is the most distinctive ownership risk compared to other cars sharing this engine. Early 2008-2010 cars with the M20 gearbox carry additional bearing wear risk. Post-2010 cars with the C510 five-speed and documented service history are the safest buy.
Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Front seat belt non-conformity (Sep 2016 - Mar 2017 production) Verify completed
Seat belt connector sensor fault (Sep 2016 - Jun 2024, Stellantis-wide recall) Verify completed
Airbag propellant system fault - second stage may not deploy (Sep 2010 - Dec 2015 production) Verify completed
Contact an Alfa Romeo or Stellantis dealer with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed. The airbag recall is particularly important for 2010-2015 models as it affects crash protection.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years) Expired on all used MiTo models
Rust perforation warranty (8 years) Expired on all but latest 2018 models
Extended warranty availability Available through third-party providers
All Alfa Romeo MiTo models are outside their original 2-year factory warranty. Extended warranties from third-party providers are available but often exclude turbocharger and DPF on higher-mileage diesels. Verify coverage details carefully before purchasing any extended warranty.
