The entry-level Mini for the third generation, powered by a detuned version of the B38 three-cylinder turbo engine shared with the Cooper. Pre-2018 cars use a 1.2-litre variant, while the LCI facelift (2018+) switched to a detuned 1.5-litre producing the same 102 hp. Significantly more reliable than the troubled R56 generation, though engine mounts, cooling system components, and turbo wastegate rattle remain known weak points on the platform.· more· less

Common Problems
Reliable for its class, but cooling and mounting components need attention
The Mini One F56 is a significant reliability improvement over the R56 generation. The B38 three-cylinder engine is fundamentally robust, with many examples exceeding 150,000 km without major powertrain failure. The main concerns are peripheral components: engine mounts, cooling system seals, and turbo wastegate wear. These are well-documented, relatively affordable to address, and easy to check during a pre-purchase inspection. Avoid early 2014-2015 production cars unless the crankshaft bearing recall is confirmed completed.

Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Crankshaft guide bearing wear (Dec 2014 - Jun 2015 production) Critical - verify completed
Passenger airbag inflator assembly (2014-2016, Takata-related) Verify completed
Fuel injector seal (selected 2014-2015 cars) Verify completed
Contact a Mini dealer with the VIN to verify all recalls and quality enhancements have been completed. The crankshaft bearing recall is particularly critical for early production cars.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years, 3 years from Nov 2016) Expired on all used cars (pre-2023 production)
Rust perforation warranty (12 years) Check production date - may still apply on newer cars
Extended warranty Available through Mini dealers, typically €500-800/year
Pre-November 2016 cars had a 2-year factory warranty. From November 2016, Mini extended this to 3 years (2+1 program). All F56 Ones from 2014-2020 are now outside their original factory warranty. Newer 2021-2024 cars may still be within the 3-year period.
