Opel Astra K 1.6 CDTI

2015-2021Last reviewed: May 2026 · How this report is builtMay 2026

2015-2021 · 1.6 CDTI (110-160 hp) 4-cylinder turbocharged diesel

The Astra K was a significant step forward for Opel with its lightweight platform and modern design. The 1.6 CDTI diesel comes in several power outputs (110, 136, and 160 hp) and offers strong fuel economy for motorway commuters. Parts are affordable and widely available across Europe, but the engine's reliance on a hydraulic timing chain tensioner is its Achilles' heel.

Excellent fuel economy on motorway Affordable parts, wide availability
Timing chain tensioner weakness DPF clogs with short-trip driving
Buy if: You commute regularly on motorways, can verify service history with frequent oil changes, and listen carefully for cold-start rattle during inspection.
Avoid if: You mostly drive short urban trips (DPF and turbo problems) or the car has a cold-start rattle lasting more than 2 seconds.

Common Problems
Reliable if maintained rigorously, but timing chain needs monitoring
The 1.6 CDTI can reach 200,000+ km with proper care, and many high-mileage examples exist. However, the timing chain tensioner is a known design weakness that Opel has never officially acknowledged. Combined with the typical diesel issues (DPF, EGR, AdBlue), running costs can escalate quickly if maintenance is neglected. Cars with documented oil changes every 10,000 km and regular motorway use are significantly more reliable than short-trip urban cars. The 110 hp version without AdBlue (pre-2017 Euro 6b) avoids one potential failure point.
Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Brake system - extended pedal travel and reduced braking power (2016-2018 diesel with manual gearbox) Verify completed
Airbag gas generator - wrong mixing ratio of ignition chemicals, airbag may not deploy (2016 production) Verify completed
Driver airbag - defective gas generator may release metal fragments on deployment (2005-2018 production range) Verify completed
Front seat structure - welding defect on seat back frame (2019 production) Verify completed
Contact an Opel dealer with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed. The brake system recall is particularly important for 2016-2018 diesel models with manual gearbox, as it directly affects safety.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years) Expired on all used Astra K models
Rust perforation warranty (12 years) May still apply on 2015+ models
Extended warranty Available through Opel dealers, varies by age/mileage
All used Astra K 1.6 CDTI models are outside their original 2-year factory warranty. Opel's 12-year rust perforation warranty may still be active on newer examples. Extended warranties are available through Opel dealers but typically exclude wear items and pre-existing conditions.
