The Seal U Design is rated at 140 kW DC, but real-world testing shows peak power around 140-150 kW sustained only from 10% to roughly 38% state of charge. Above 60%, speeds drop significantly. In cold weather (below 15 degrees Celsius), LFP chemistry limits charging to 30-50 kW unless battery pre-conditioning is used via the navigation system. Some owners report failed charging sessions at certain charger brands due to CCS2 handshake errors. These have been progressively addressed through OTA software updates improving charger compatibility. Charging from 10-80% takes approximately 43 minutes with an average speed of 85 kW, which is slower than 800V competitors. The cost entry reflects potential diagnostic visits for persistent charging faults; most issues are software-related and resolved under warranty.

The Seal U routes nearly all controls through its large rotating touchscreen: climate, drive modes, camera, navigation, and settings. When the DiLink infotainment system freezes, you lose access to all of these simultaneously. Reported issues include touch delays, apps failing to launch, and Apple CarPlay or Android Auto disconnecting mid-session. The system can also forget saved driver preferences after shutdown. BYD has released multiple OTA updates to improve stability. A factory reset through the settings menu typically resolves persistent problems. Voice control responsiveness has been criticized as slow and inconsistent. Most software issues do not require dealer visits.

The Seal U relies on a 12V auxiliary battery to activate the contactors that connect the main traction battery. If the DC-DC converter does not adequately maintain this 12V battery, or if the car sits unused for two or more weeks, it can go flat. The result is a completely unresponsive vehicle despite the main battery being full. This issue is reported across BYD's European EV range (Atto 3, Dolphin, Seal). Replacement cost for the 12V battery is approximately 150 to 250 euros including labor. BYD has issued software updates to improve DC-DC converter charging behavior. Keeping the car plugged in or driving it at least once a week prevents this.

Multiple owners have reported rattling noises from the dashboard area, driver-side door panel, and A-pillar trim. These are caused by trim clips not being fully seated during assembly or panel edges vibrating against the frame. The issue is more prevalent on early production cars from early to mid 2024. BYD dealers have addressed these under warranty by adding felt tape or repositioning clips. Build quality has reportedly improved on later production runs. While cosmetically annoying, especially in the quiet cabin of an EV, these are not structural concerns.

Some owners have reported a persistent knocking sound from the front suspension when driving over uneven roads. In documented cases, shock absorbers were replaced under warranty, but the noise persisted in some instances. The root cause has not been definitively identified across all cases: some trace to anti-roll bar links, others to shock absorber mounts. At 2,147 kg, the Seal U puts significant stress on front suspension components. The cost range covers anti-roll bar link replacement at the low end to shock absorber replacement at the high end. This issue has been reported from as early as delivery, suggesting assembly variation rather than wear.

Some owners have experienced phantom emergency braking events when approaching roundabouts, passing under bridges, or when the radar sensors interpret departing vehicles as collision threats. This is a sensor calibration and software issue rather than a hardware defect. BYD has released OTA updates that reduced the frequency of these events. ADAS sensitivity can be adjusted through the touchscreen settings, and individual ADAS features can be disabled if needed. While startling when it occurs, no hardware repair is typically required.

Like most EVs, the Seal U uses regenerative braking for the majority of deceleration, which means the conventional brake discs are used infrequently. Surface rust builds up on the disc faces and is not cleaned off by regular brake application. Over time, this can develop into pitting that cannot be removed by normal use. The issue is accelerated by coastal conditions or winter road salt. Periodic deliberate firm braking helps keep discs clean. Disc replacement cost is 200 to 600 euros depending on whether fronts only or all four corners need attention. The Seal U uses standard cast-iron discs.
