BYD's compact electric hatchback brought affordable long-range EV motoring to Europe from late 2023. The Boost trim pairs a 60.4 kWh LFP Blade Battery with a 150 kW motor, delivering roughly 400 km WLTP range and multi-link rear suspension for a comfortable ride. The powertrain itself is proving robust in high-mileage examples, but BYD's rapid European expansion has left some gaps in service infrastructure and software polish.· more· less

Common Problems
Sound powertrain, but software and build quality need maturing
The BYD Dolphin's core EV components are proving reliable. The LFP Blade Battery shows minimal degradation even at high mileages (over 90% capacity retained at 200,000 km in documented cases), and the electric motor has no widely reported failures. The main ownership risks are software-related (infotainment freezes, ADAS calibration, 12V battery management) and early-production build quality inconsistencies. BYD's European service network is expanding but remains thinner than established brands, which can mean longer wait times for non-urgent repairs. Later-production cars (2025 onwards) show measurable improvements in both software stability and build quality.

General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Steering column controller (CEPS) fire risk (Nov 2022 - Dec 2023 production) Critical - verify completed
Takata airbag inflator (if applicable to early units) Verify if applicable
The most important recall affects Dolphins built between November 2022 and December 2023 for a steering column controller defect that could cause overheating and fire. This recall was issued in China for approximately 97,000 vehicles. Contact BYD with the VIN to verify whether your specific car is affected and whether the fix (installation pad) has been applied. European-delivered cars from this production period should be checked.
Warranty Status
Vehicle warranty (6 years / 150,000 km) Check remaining coverage based on registration date
Battery warranty (8 years / 250,000 km) SOH guaranteed above 70% for full period
E-drive system (8 years / 150,000 km) Covers electric motor, inverter, reducer
Anti-perforation warranty (12 years) Covers structural rust-through
BYD offers one of the most comprehensive warranty packages in Europe. The 6-year/150,000 km vehicle warranty is significantly longer than most competitors. The battery warranty was extended to 8 years/250,000 km in late 2025, applying retroactively to existing owners. Used buyers should verify remaining warranty coverage and whether all scheduled maintenance has been completed at authorized dealers, as missed services may affect warranty validity.
