BYD's compact electric hatchback brought genuine value to the European EV market from 2023. The Design is the top trim, adding a panoramic roof, wireless charging, and Vehicle-to-Load. Underneath sits BYD's own Blade Battery (LFP chemistry), which is thermally stable and degrades slowly. The 204 hp motor provides brisk performance for the class, and the 60.4 kWh pack delivers a real-world range of around 300-340 km in mild conditions. As BYD's European presence is still young, the dealer and parts network is growing but not yet as dense as established brands.· more· less

Robust LFP battery technology Strong 6-year factory warranty
Immature dealer/parts network Build quality inconsistencies
Buy if: You want an affordable, well-equipped EV with a long warranty and are comfortable with a newer brand still establishing its European service network.
Avoid if: You rely on a dense dealer network for servicing, do mostly very short cold-weather trips (LFP charging slows significantly below 0 degrees C), or need fast DC charging speeds.

Common Problems
Young model with few major failures but some teething issues
The BYD Dolphin benefits from a fundamentally robust Blade Battery (LFP) that degrades slowly and has excellent thermal stability. No widespread powertrain failures have emerged. The main concerns are software maturity (improving with OTA updates), build quality inconsistencies on early production cars, and the still-growing European dealer and parts network. The 6-year / 150,000 km warranty with transferable coverage provides strong protection for used buyers. Most issues reported are minor and fixable. The steering controller recall (CEPS) should be verified as completed on any 2022-2023 production car.

General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Steering controller (CEPS) capacitor microcracking - fire risk (Nov 2022 - Dec 2023 production) Critical - verify completed
Takata airbag inflator (if applicable to specific production batches) Verify with VIN
Contact BYD with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed. The CEPS steering controller recall is the most critical and affects nearly all early-production European Dolphins. BYD dealers install an insulation pad free of charge.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (6 years / 150,000 km) Active on most used Dolphins (production from 2023)
Battery warranty (8 years / 250,000 km) Covers capacity below 70% SOH
Electric motor / drive unit (8 years / 150,000 km) Covers motor and inverter
Anti-perforation warranty (12 years) Covers rust-through manufacturing defects
BYD offers one of the most comprehensive warranties in the European market. The 6-year general warranty and 8-year battery warranty are both transferable to subsequent owners, provided the vehicle has a complete service history maintained at authorized service points. The battery warranty guarantees a minimum 70% State of Health. Verify warranty transfer conditions with BYD directly, as terms can vary by market.
