The first-generation Blade Battery uses lithium iron phosphate (LFP) chemistry, which is inherently more sensitive to cold temperatures than nickel-based (NMC) cells. When the battery temperature drops below approximately 15°C, the battery management system aggressively limits DC charging power to protect the cells. Real-world reports show charging speeds as low as 30-50 kW on 150 kW-rated chargers during winter months. Pre-conditioning the battery via the BYD app before arriving at a charger helps, but does not fully resolve the issue. This is not a defect but a characteristic of the LFP chemistry used in this generation. BYD's second-generation Blade Battery (not fitted to this model) addresses this limitation. No repair cost applies, but significantly longer charging stops in winter affect usability.

Owners report the central touchscreen occasionally freezing, becoming unresponsive, or randomly restarting. When the screen freezes, climate control, reversing camera, and navigation all become inaccessible until a reset is performed. A soft reset (holding the volume-down button on the steering wheel for 15-20 seconds) typically resolves the issue. BYD has addressed many of these bugs through OTA updates, and the situation has improved with later software versions. In rare cases where hardware is at fault (screen controller failure), replacement costs at a BYD dealer can reach €400-500. Most instances are software-related and resolved at no cost through updates.

Like many modern EVs, the BYD Seal U uses a conventional 12V battery to power ancillary systems (door locks, computer startup, alarm) before the main high-voltage system activates. The Atto 3, which shares much of the BYD platform DNA, has documented 12V battery lifespans of only 18-24 months in some cases. The Seal U may exhibit similar behavior, particularly if the vehicle is left parked for weeks without driving. Replacement with the correct specification battery costs €150-260 including fitting and IBS (intelligent battery sensor) reset. Keeping the car plugged in regularly and driving at least weekly helps maintain the 12V battery charge.

Several Seal U owners have reported a persistent knocking sound from the front suspension when driving over uneven roads. The noise has been present from new in some cases. Service centers have attempted repairs by replacing shock absorbers, but the issue was not always resolved, suggesting the root cause may be sway bar link tolerances or bushing fitment rather than the dampers themselves. For affected cars, replacing sway bar links and associated bushings typically costs €200-400. If damper replacement is needed, costs can reach €500-600. This appears to affect a minority of cars rather than being a universal issue.

The Seal U's ADAS system (lane keeping assist, autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control) relies on cameras and sensors that are precisely calibrated to the windshield. If the windshield is chipped, cracked, or replaced, the ADAS system needs professional recalibration. This must currently be done at a BYD authorized service point using brand-specific equipment, which limits where the work can be performed. Calibration costs €180-360 on top of the windshield replacement itself. While this is standard for any modern car with ADAS, the limited BYD service network in Europe can mean longer wait times for appointments.

BYD operates three parts warehouses in Europe (Netherlands, Sweden, UK), but the network is still scaling to match the pace of vehicle sales. Owners have reported waiting several weeks for non-critical parts like body panels, lighting modules, and interior trim pieces. While mechanical and safety-critical parts are generally available more quickly, the wait times can be frustrating and may leave the car off the road longer than expected after minor incidents. This is not a direct repair cost but can result in higher costs through extended rental car needs or lost mobility. The situation is improving as BYD invests in its European infrastructure, but buyers should be aware of this limitation, particularly in countries with fewer BYD service points.
