A widely reported issue across BYD's European EV lineup. The Dolphin Surf, like the Atto 3 and Dolphin, relies on the main battery pack to keep the 12V auxiliary battery charged. However, the DC-DC converter and sleep mode management can be inconsistent, allowing the 12V battery to drain if the vehicle is parked for extended periods. Symptoms include inability to unlock or start the car, loss of app connectivity, and dashboard warnings. The 12V battery itself typically costs €100-200 to replace. Driving the car regularly (at least once every 10 days) or keeping it plugged in prevents the issue. A trickle charger is a practical backup. Some owners report improved behavior after software updates, suggesting BYD is refining the energy management firmware.

One of the most commonly reported annoyances across BYD models in Europe. The lane keep assist system can violently correct steering even on straight, clear roads, catching drivers off guard. The forward collision warning may trigger unnecessary emergency braking near roundabouts or when adjacent vehicles turn. The speed limit alert is frequently inaccurate and resets to 'on' with every ignition cycle, requiring manual deactivation each drive. BYD has addressed some of these behaviors through OTA software updates, with many owners reporting significant improvement. However, the default-on reset behavior persists. The cost is typically zero if resolved by an OTA update, though a dealer software flash may cost €100-200 if the car cannot receive OTA updates.

BYD's infotainment software is still maturing for the European market. Owners report intermittent freezes of the 10.1-inch central display, Bluetooth connectivity drops, and Apple CarPlay or Android Auto disconnections. The climate control interface can behave erratically after a system freeze, requiring a manual reboot. OTA updates have progressively improved stability, and most owners find the system acceptable after the first few updates. In rare cases where the head unit itself fails, replacement costs approximately €200-300 for parts plus labor. For most owners, a simple system restart resolves temporary glitches.

Build quality on the Dolphin Surf is a step below established European competitors. Owners report rattles from door panel trim, the headliner, and the dashboard area, particularly over rough surfaces. The issue is cosmetic rather than structural and typically appears within the first few thousand kilometers as clips and fasteners settle. BYD dealers address this under warranty by adding felt tape or reseating clips. The hard plastics used throughout the interior amplify the perception of noise. Wind noise at motorway speeds is also notable for the segment, partly due to the car's compact dimensions and relatively thin door seals.

The Dolphin Surf uses an LFP (lithium iron phosphate) Blade Battery, which is inherently more sensitive to cold temperatures than NMC chemistry. Below 10 degrees Celsius, DC charging speed drops sharply from the 85 kW peak. Below 0 degrees, the battery may only accept 10-20 kW. Unlike many competitors, the Dolphin Surf has no battery preconditioning feature, meaning you cannot warm the battery before arriving at a charger by setting a navigation destination. The practical workaround is 30-45 minutes of highway driving before a DC charging stop, which warms the battery through use. This is a design limitation rather than a fault, and carries no repair cost, but it significantly affects winter road trip usability.

Reports from the related BYD Seagull (the Chinese-market equivalent) indicate that front suspension lower control arm bushings can wear prematurely, particularly in markets with poor road surfaces. In Brazil, where the car is sold as the Dolphin Mini, suspension arm failures were reported at around 70,000 km, attributed to the vehicle's relatively high weight (1,465 kg) for its compact size. European roads are generally smoother, so the issue is less pronounced, but front-end knocking noises after 30,000+ km should be investigated. Bushing replacement costs €300-500 per side including labor and alignment. This is worth monitoring but not yet a widespread European concern.
