BYD Dolphin Surf Active Mk1

The Dolphin Surf's forward-facing camera system can misread road markings and speed signs, causing the Lane Keep Assist to jerk the steering wheel unexpectedly and the speed limit alert to trigger repeatedly. This is a software calibration problem, not a hardware defect. BYD has been issuing OTA updates (V2.0.0 and later) that significantly improve behavior. Early owners report the updates resolve most complaints, but the system can still be overly sensitive on certain road types. The cost is typically zero if resolved via OTA, but some owners have reported needing a dealer visit for a forced software reflash (€100-200 for diagnostics and labor). Verify the car runs the latest software version before purchase.

Like many EVs, the Dolphin Surf can drain its 12V auxiliary battery if left parked for extended periods (2-3 weeks). Symptoms include sluggish dashboard startup, random warning messages, and in some cases the inability to unlock the car via the app. The DC-DC converter that charges the 12V battery from the main pack can sometimes fail to maintain adequate charge. Replacement of the 12V battery costs €120-260 depending on whether you use a BYD dealer or an independent shop. Keeping the main battery above 20% SoC when parking for extended periods helps. A trickle charger is a worthwhile investment if the car sits unused for weeks at a time.

The central touchscreen occasionally freezes, particularly when running wired Apple CarPlay. Bluetooth connectivity can drop mid-session, and user profiles may reset after OTA updates. These are software issues that BYD has been actively addressing through updates. Most can be resolved with a soft reset of the infotainment unit (hold power button for 10 seconds). In persistent cases, a dealer visit for a cache clear and diagnostics costs around €60-150. The infotainment stability has improved noticeably with each software version, and later-production cars tend to be better.

Some owners have reported a steering warning light accompanied by temporary stiffness of the steering. In most cases this is a software calibration issue resolved by an OBD diagnostic reset (€60-180). In rare cases, a torque sensor realignment or EPS control unit replacement may be needed, pushing costs to €400-800. BYD recalled nearly 97,000 Dolphin and Yuan Plus models in China in 2024 for a steering controller capacitor defect that could cause overheating, but European models have not been included in this recall. Still, verify the EPS system status during a pre-purchase inspection.

The LFP (lithium iron phosphate) Blade Battery is significantly more temperature-sensitive than NMC batteries when it comes to charging speed. Below 10 degrees Celsius, DC fast charging speed drops sharply. Below 0 degrees, the battery may accept only 10-20 kW instead of its 65 kW maximum. This is inherent to LFP chemistry, not a defect. It means winter DC charging sessions can take over an hour for a meaningful range boost. Pre-conditioning the battery before arriving at a fast charger helps, but the 30 kWh Active variant's already limited range (around 160 km in cold weather) makes this a significant practical limitation for winter use.

Because EVs rely heavily on regenerative braking, the mechanical brake pads see very little use. Over time, the pads can vitrify (glaze over), causing low-speed squealing and slightly longer stopping distances, especially after wet weather. This is common across all EVs but worth monitoring. Regular deliberate use of the mechanical brakes (once per week on a quiet road) prevents the issue. If glazing occurs, pad replacement costs €70-160 depending on front or rear, plus possible disc skimming at around €40-60.

Several owners report interior rattles developing within the first 12-18 months, particularly from the dashboard near the A-pillars, door card trim, and around the sunroof mechanism (if equipped). The stiffer European suspension tune (compared to the Chinese Seagull) transmits more road imperfections into the cabin, which exacerbates any looseness in interior fittings. Most rattles can be addressed by re-seating clips and applying felt tape at contact points. Dealer fixes under warranty are typically free; out of warranty, expect €50-150 for trim reattachment.
