The Sealion 5 DM-i is BYD's compact plug-in hybrid SUV for Europe, built on the fifth-generation DM (Super Hybrid) platform. The Comfort trim pairs a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated Atkinson-cycle engine with a permanent-magnet electric motor and a 12.9 kWh LFP Blade Battery for a combined 212 hp. It competes with the Kia Sportage PHEV and Hyundai Tucson PHEV, offering aggressive pricing from around 31,000 euros new. BYD's European dealer and parts network is still maturing, which is the main ownership consideration beyond the powertrain itself.· more· less

Common Problems
Promising technology, but limited European track record
The Sealion 5 DM-i uses BYD's latest hybrid platform, which benefits from millions of units sold in China since 2021. The LFP Blade Battery is thermally stable and durable, and the 1.5L Atkinson engine is mechanically simple (no turbo, no timing belt). The main ownership risks are not mechanical but logistical: BYD's European dealer and parts network is still scaling up, and the model has no multi-year European ownership data yet. The generous 6-year vehicle warranty and 8-year battery warranty provide strong protection for early adopters. Most reported issues (12V battery, infotainment, ADAS calibration) are software-related and fixable via updates.
