BYD Sealion 5 DM-i Comfort Mk1

This is a widely reported issue across multiple BYD models (Atto 3, Seal, Seal U) and has also appeared on early Sealion 5 units. The DC-DC converter that should top up the 12V battery from the main Blade Battery does not always activate reliably when the vehicle is locked and parked. The system wakes periodically for housekeeping tasks, drawing current, but may not recharge sufficiently. After 7-14 days of standing, the 12V battery can be completely flat, leaving the car unresponsive. BYD has released firmware updates to improve DC-DC converter wake-up behaviour, and some owners report improvement after a service visit. Keeping the vehicle on a trickle charger when parked for extended periods is a common workaround. Replacement of the 12V battery costs around 150-250 euros; if the DC-DC converter module needs replacement, costs can reach 400 euros.

BYD owners across the range report instances where the 12.8-inch central touchscreen becomes unresponsive, exhibits significant lag, or reboots spontaneously. This can temporarily affect climate controls, navigation, and the reversing camera. Typical triggers include interrupted OTA updates, full cache memory, or software bugs in specific firmware versions. BYD actively pushes OTA updates to address these issues, and many early bugs have been resolved. A soft reboot (long press of the power button) usually restores function immediately. In rare cases, the head unit may need to be replaced at the dealer (covered under warranty). Outside warranty, a head unit replacement could cost around 200 euros for the module plus labour.

The Sealion 5's driver monitoring camera on the A-pillar frequently triggers audible distracted driving or fatigue warnings when the driver checks side mirrors, yawns, or wears certain sunglasses. The lane keep assist can also be overly aggressive on poorly marked roads. BYD calibrated the system to achieve high safety ratings, resulting in an oversensitive baseline. Owners can reduce alert sensitivity in the touchscreen ADAS settings, but a permanent fix requires a BYD service centre firmware update to recalibrate the camera detection logic. This is typically done free of charge under warranty. Outside warranty, a service visit for firmware recalibration costs around 100-150 euros.

BYD's European parts network is still scaling up. While the company operates warehouses in the Netherlands, Sweden, and the UK, early adopters in Australia and the UK have reported wait times of several weeks to several months for body panels after minor collision damage. BYD has acknowledged the issue and is expanding its network (targeting 2,000 European service points by end of 2026), but parts availability for a new model like the Sealion 5 may be uneven during the first year or two. Mechanical service parts (filters, brake pads, oil) are generally available quickly. The cost impact is indirect: extended rental car expenses during prolonged repairs, or insurance premium increases due to write-off risk on minor damage. Budget 200-500 euros for potential rental costs if a body repair takes longer than expected.

Some BYD DM-i owners in China have reported intermittent issues where the vehicle fails to switch to full EV mode despite having sufficient battery charge. The engine continues running when it should not, reducing fuel efficiency and causing vibration at low speed. This has been documented on earlier DM-i models (Qin Plus, Song Plus) and is typically resolved through a software update at the dealer. The 5th-generation DM system in the Sealion 5 uses updated control software, so this issue may be less prevalent. If the problem persists and the E-CVT control module needs replacement, costs could reach 600-800 euros outside warranty. Under warranty (6 years for this car), this would be covered.

BYD recalled 88,981 Qin Plus DM-i vehicles in China in late 2025 due to battery pack cell consistency issues that reduced electric range. Some owners reported achieving only 20 km of electric range instead of the rated 55 km. BYD addressed this through remote software diagnostics and battery pack replacement where needed. The Sealion 5 uses a newer production line and the Comfort trim's 12.9 kWh Blade Battery is relatively small, limiting the impact of any cell variation. BYD's EU battery warranty covers 8 years / 250,000 km with a 70% state of health guarantee. If replacement is needed outside this warranty, battery module costs for a 12.9 kWh pack are estimated at 1,500-2,000 euros.
