Fiat's early-2000s family hatchback designed to rival the Golf and Focus, penned by Giorgetto Giugiaro. The 1.2 16V is the entry-level petrol variant, using the 188A5 engine shared with the Punto and Idea. With just 80 hp and a 6-speed manual, it is firmly a city and suburban car. Spacious for its class, cheap to insure, and affordable to buy, but the Stilo's electrical architecture was Fiat's first use of CAN-bus wiring and it shows.· more· less

Common Problems
Electrical reliability is the main concern, engine is adequate when maintained
The Fiat Stilo 1.2 16V shares its platform's reputation for electrical unreliability. The ECU, electric power steering, and various sensor connectors are all documented weak points. The 188A5 engine itself is mechanically simple and can reach high mileages when oil levels are monitored and the timing belt is changed on schedule (every 60,000 km). Parts are cheap and widely available, and the car's low value means independent garage rates are the norm. A well-maintained example with a functioning ECU and no outstanding electrical faults can serve as affordable transport, but buyers should expect some electrical troubleshooting over time.

Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Fuel system leak risk on early production cars (2001-2002) Verify completed
Side airbag inadvertent deployment due to sensor fault (various production dates) Verify completed
Airbag control module software update (various production dates) Verify completed
The Fiat Stilo is now 19-25 years old and recall records may be incomplete. Contact a Fiat dealer with the VIN to check for any outstanding recalls. Given the car's age, many recalls will already have been completed during routine servicing.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years) Expired on all Stilos
Rust perforation warranty (8 years) Expired on all Stilos
All Fiat Stilos are well outside their original factory warranty. Third-party used car warranties are available but are unlikely to be cost-effective given the car's very low market value. Budget for repairs directly.
