Tall, spacious mini-MPV built on the same platform as the Punto, produced in Serbia from 2012 to 2022. The 1.3 MultiJet II diesel is one of the most widely produced small diesels in Europe, used across Fiat, Alfa Romeo, Opel, and Suzuki models. In the 500L it produces 85 or 95 hp and is paired with a 5-speed manual or 5-speed MTA Dualogic automated manual. Popular with families for its roomy interior and low fuel consumption, though the 500L's below-average reliability reputation makes careful pre-purchase inspection essential.· more· less

Common Problems
Reasonably reliable engine in a less reliable car
The 1.3 MultiJet II diesel itself is a well-proven unit with millions produced across multiple brands since 2003. With diligent maintenance and regular oil changes using the correct specification, the engine can comfortably reach 200,000 km and beyond. However, the 500L as a package adds wiring harness fragility, Dualogic gearbox issues (on auto models), and the typical diesel maintenance demands of DPF and EGR systems. Manual gearbox versions with full service history and evidence of regular highway driving are the safest choice. Avoid cars with cold-start rattle or missing service records.
