The top-spec diesel in the Grande Punto range, the 1.9 Multijet was offered in 120 hp (8-valve) and 130 hp (16-valve) variants sharing the proven Fiat JTD architecture also used in the Alfa Romeo 159 and Fiat Croma. With 280-300 Nm of torque and real-world fuel economy around 5.5-6.5 L/100 km, it was unusually punchy for a supermini. The engine itself can reach 250,000+ km with disciplined maintenance, but the M32 gearbox, dual mass flywheel, EGR system, and electric power steering column are all documented weak points.· more· less

Common Problems
Robust engine let down by known gearbox and electrical weak points
The 1.9 Multijet engine itself is one of Fiat's more durable diesel designs, capable of exceeding 250,000 km with proper maintenance. The main ownership risks come from the M32 gearbox bearings (shared weakness with many GM/Opel models), the dual mass flywheel, and the electric power steering column. Cars that have lived in salt-road countries also need careful inspection for structural corrosion. DPF-equipped models require regular motorway driving to prevent filter clogging. Overall, well-maintained examples with verified gearbox health offer good value, but buyers should budget for the M32 and DMF as likely repairs during ownership.

Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Steering column shaft bolt (2008-2009 production, 500,000 units affected) Critical - verify completed
Seatbelt tensioner crimping defect (2016-2017 production Punto models) Verify if applicable
Faulty Garrett turbocharger batch (early production, no official recall by Fiat) Not applicable
Contact a Fiat dealer with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed. The steering column recall is particularly important for 2008-2009 models. Note that Fiat did not issue a formal recall for the faulty Garrett turbo batch, unlike Volkswagen for a similar issue.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years) Expired on all Grande Punto models
Rust perforation warranty (8 years) Expired on all Grande Punto models
Extended warranty Generally not available for cars this age
All Grande Punto 1.9 Multijet models are well outside their original 2-year factory warranty. Extended warranty options for cars of this age are extremely limited or unavailable. Budget accordingly for out-of-pocket repairs.
