Fiat 500 1.4 Mk1

2007-2015Last reviewed: April 2026 · How this report is builtApril 2026

2007-2015 · 1.4 16v FIRE (100 hp) 4-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol

The sportiest engine option in the original Fiat 500 lineup, the 1.4 16v offers noticeably more power than the base 1.2 while sharing the same charming retro styling. Popular as a city car with extra overtaking ability, it sold well across Europe from 2007 to 2015. The naturally aspirated FIRE engine is mechanically proven, but the car's electrical systems and cooling components need attention as these cars age.

Proven FIRE engine, easy to maintain Cheap parts, large aftermarket
Electric power steering failures Cooling system prone to corrosion
Buy if: You want a characterful city car with adequate motorway performance and can verify the cooling system and power steering are in good condition.
Avoid if: You need a Dualogic automatic (unreliable) or want a car that requires minimal attention to cooling and electrical systems.

Common Problems
Reliable engine, but electrical and cooling systems need watching
The 1.4 FIRE engine itself is robust and can comfortably exceed 200,000 km with proper maintenance. The main concerns are the electric power steering column, cooling system corrosion, and the Dualogic gearbox if equipped. Manual gearbox cars with a well-maintained cooling system are the best bet. All issues are well-documented and parts are inexpensive, but repairs add up if neglected.

↔ Also consider

Fiat 500 1.2 2007-2015 Same platform with smaller, less powerful engine. Shares all electrical and chassis issues. The 1.2 has a simpler 8-valve head but the same cooling and steering weaknesses. Abarth 595 1.4 T-Jet 2012-2024 Turbocharged version of the same FIRE engine. More power means higher running costs and added turbo-related risks, but the base engine is shared. Mini Cooper F56 2014-2021 More refined and better built, but significantly more expensive to buy and maintain. Fewer electrical gremlins but higher parts costs. Opel Corsa D 1.4 2006-2014 Similar size and price. Opel has its own electrical issues and the engine has timing chain tensioner concerns. Less stylish but more practical. Fiat Panda Mk3 0.9 TwinAir 2012-2024 Same brand, different character. The TwinAir 2-cylinder has higher oil consumption but the Panda is more practical. Similar Fiat electrical quirks.
