Fiat Grande Punto 1.3 Multijet

2005-2009Last reviewed: April 2026 · How this report is builtApril 2026

2005-2009 · 1.3 Multijet (75-90 hp) 4-cylinder turbocharged diesel

Italy's best-selling supermini of its era, the Grande Punto paired sharp Giugiaro styling with the widely used 1.3 Multijet diesel, an engine also found in Alfa Romeos, Opels, and Suzukis. Fuel economy is excellent and the engine can reach very high mileages with proper oil changes, but the timing chain tensioner, EPS steering column, and DPF system demand careful attention on used examples.

Very fuel-efficient diesel engine Cheap parts and insurance
Timing chain tensioner wear Electric power steering failures
Buy if: You want a cheap-to-run diesel city car with a manual gearbox and can verify the timing chain has been serviced.
Avoid if: You mostly do short urban trips (DPF clogging risk) or need a Dualogic automatic (unreliable).
Expected Annual Maintenance Costs
€700 - €1,350/year
15,000 km/year
Fixed costs
€400-700
Risk buffer

Common Problems
Fundamentally robust engine, but diesel-specific and body issues add up
The 1.3 Multijet engine is one of the most produced diesel engines in Europe and can reach 250,000+ km with proper maintenance. However, the timing chain tensioner is a known weak point that demands proactive replacement, and the DPF system requires regular motorway driving to stay healthy. The Grande Punto body is prone to corrosion in northern European climates, and the electric power steering column is an expensive common failure. Manual gearbox versions are significantly more reliable than Dualogic.
Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Steering column shaft bolt torque (2008-2009 production, 500,000 vehicles) Critical - verify completed
Steering column lower fastening (LHD, March 2006-September 2007, 44,000 vehicles) Verify completed
Steering column fastening (RHD, pre-November 2006, 21,000 vehicles) Verify completed
Brake hose vulcanisation defect (various production dates) Verify completed
Seat belt tensioner crimping defect (2016-2017 Punto models) Verify completed if applicable
The Grande Punto has had multiple steering column recalls affecting different production periods. Contact a Fiat dealer with the VIN to verify all applicable recalls have been completed. The 2008-2009 recall affecting 500,000 vehicles is particularly important.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years) Expired on all Grande Punto models
Rust perforation warranty 8 years from first registration - expired
Extended warranty Third-party warranties available, limited coverage on older cars
All Fiat Grande Punto models are well outside their original 2-year factory warranty. Given the car's age (15+ years), third-party warranty options are limited and may exclude high-wear diesel components.

↔ Also consider

Fiat Punto Evo 1.4 2009-2012 Petrol facelift successor. No DPF or timing chain worries, but the 1.4 FIRE engine has its own head gasket concerns. Opel Corsa D 1.4 2006-2014 Similar segment, simpler petrol engine. Generally more reliable but less fuel-efficient. Renault Clio III 1.2 2005-2012 Better interior quality and ride. Petrol engine avoids diesel-specific issues but higher fuel costs. Fiat 500 1.2 2007-present Same Fiat DNA, smaller body. Petrol-only avoids diesel complexity but EPS steering issues are shared. Peugeot 207 1.4 HDi 2006-2012 Comparable small diesel. Different engine problems (ECU water damage, power steering failure) but similar running costs.
