A uniquely capable city car with genuine all-wheel drive, pairing Fiat's characterful two-cylinder TwinAir engine with a viscous-coupling 4x4 system and raised ground clearance. It found a devoted following among rural owners and light off-road enthusiasts across Europe. Production of the 4x4 variant ended in 2022 due to component supply issues, making well-maintained examples increasingly sought after.· more· less

Buy if: You want a compact 4x4 for rural roads, light off-road use, or mountain driving, and can verify complete service history with the correct oil specification.
Avoid if: You only drive on paved urban roads (a 2WD Panda is cheaper to buy and run), or you cannot confirm regular oil changes with the specified 0W-30 grade.

Common Problems
Characterful but needs attentive ownership, especially the 4x4 components
The Panda 4x4 TwinAir combines the engine complexity of the 2WD TwinAir (MultiAir, turbo, DMF) with additional drivetrain components that need monitoring: propshaft center bearing, rear differential seals, and on older cars the viscous coupling. None of these issues are catastrophic when caught early, but neglect can escalate costs quickly. Oil maintenance is the single most important factor for engine longevity. Owners who use the correct 0W-30 specification and change oil at or before the 15,000 km interval consistently report reliable running well past 130,000 km. The 4x4 system itself is mechanically simple and robust when maintained, but checking underneath for oil leaks and propshaft condition should be part of every service.

Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Steering column height adjustment may disengage while driving (2018 production) Verify completed
Airbag propellant mixture ratio incorrect, second stage side airbag may not deploy (2016 production) Verify completed
Steering wheel badge may detach during airbag deployment (Jan-May 2019 production) Verify completed
Side impact sensor incorrectly connected, airbags may not deploy (Mar-Jul 2023 production) Critical - verify completed
Headlights may turn off without warning (2015 production, software update) Verify completed
Contact a Fiat dealer with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed. The side impact sensor recall (2023) and steering column recall (2018) are particularly important for safety.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years) Expired on all used examples
Rust perforation warranty (8 years) May still apply on 2018+ cars
Extended warranty Available through Fiat dealers and third parties
All Fiat Panda 4x4 TwinAir models from 2012-2020 are outside their original 2-year factory warranty. The final production year (2022) models may have partial coverage remaining. Given the MultiAir, turbo, and 4x4 drivetrain risks, an independent pre-purchase inspection or extended warranty is recommended.
