The Fiat Punto Mk2 (Type 188) was one of Europe's best-selling superminis between 1999 and 2010. The 1.9 JTD diesel uses the well-proven 188A2 engine, a Fiat-group workhorse also found in the Stilo, Doblo, and Multipla. It is widely considered the most reliable engine option for this platform, with many examples exceeding 250,000 km. Running costs are low and parts are cheap and widely available, but at this age rust and worn ancillaries are the primary concerns.· more· less

Buy if: You want a cheap-to-run diesel supermini and can find one with a solid body, complete service history, and a recent timing belt.
Avoid if: You are not comfortable inspecting for structural rust or dealing with age-related diesel component wear on a 15-25 year old car.

Common Problems
Robust engine in an aging body
The 1.9 JTD engine is one of Fiat's most durable diesel units and can reliably exceed 250,000 km with proper servicing. The main ownership risks stem from the car's age rather than fundamental design flaws: structural rust, worn ancillaries (turbo vanes, EGR, power steering), and gearbox bearing wear are the primary cost drivers. A thorough underbody inspection before purchase is essential, as corrosion damage can quickly exceed the car's market value.

Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Brake pipe corrosion from road salt exposure (1999-2003 models) Verify completed
Front seatbelt pretensioner malfunction (selected production batches) Verify completed
Crankshaft pulley breakage risk (selected engine variants) Verify if applicable
Contact a Fiat dealer with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed. Due to the car's age, some recall work may have been done but records not properly logged. The brake pipe corrosion recall is particularly important for cars from salt-road regions.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years) Expired on all Punto Mk2 models
Rust perforation warranty (8 years) Expired on all Punto Mk2 models
Extended warranty availability Not typically available for cars of this age
All Punto Mk2 models are well outside any factory or extended warranty. Budget accordingly for all repairs. Third-party breakdown cover may be available but often excludes cars over 15 years old.

Fiat Punto Evo 1.3 Multijet
Fiat Punto Evo 1.3 Multijet 2009-2018
Newer platform with smaller diesel. Shares EPS steering issues. The 1.3 Multijet has timing chain tensioner concerns that the 1.9 JTD avoids.
Volkswagen Polo Mk4 1.9 TDI
Volkswagen Polo Mk4 1.9 TDI 2001-2009
More robust body and better corrosion resistance. The PD TDI engine is strong but injector and DMF issues can be expensive.
Ford Fiesta Mk6 1.6 TDCi
Ford Fiesta Mk6 1.6 TDCi 2004-2008
Similar age competitor. The DV6 diesel has turbo and injector issues. Ford parts are cheap but the Punto's 1.9 JTD is generally more durable.
Peugeot 206 1.4 HDi
Peugeot 206 1.4 HDi 2001-2009
Smaller, less powerful diesel. Generally reliable but head gasket and turbo issues reported. Better body corrosion resistance than the Punto.
Fiat Stilo 1.6
Fiat Stilo 1.6 2001-2007
Larger Fiat on a similar platform. Known for more electrical gremlins. The petrol 1.6 is simpler but body rust is equally problematic.
