One of Europe's most popular city cars of its era, designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro and built in vast numbers. The 1.2 FIRE 8v engine has been in production since the 1990s and is among the simplest, cheapest-to-maintain powertrains available. With careful coolant management and basic servicing, many examples reach 200,000+ km without catastrophic failure.· more· less

Buy if: You want the cheapest possible motoring with well-understood mechanicals and can verify the timing belt has been changed on schedule.
Avoid if: You live in a region with heavy winter salting and the rear axle shows significant corrosion, or you need a semi-automatic (Dualogic issues).

Common Problems
Simple and predictable with inexpensive repairs
The 1.2 FIRE engine is one of the most proven small car engines in Europe, with many examples exceeding 200,000 km. Issues exist but are well-documented, cheap to fix, and rarely catastrophic. The non-interference timing belt design on the 60hp version means even worst-case scenarios are survivable. Main areas to watch are the cooling system (to prevent head gasket failure), the EPS steering column, gear selector cables, and rear axle corrosion on cars from salt-belt regions. With regular coolant checks and annual underbody inspections, most Pandas provide low-cost motoring for years.

Same FIRE engine in a newer body. Head gasket, EPS, and gear cable issues persist. Mk3 adds slightly better refinement but identical mechanical risk.
Toyota Aygo 1.0 VVT-i AB10
Toyota Aygo 1.0 VVT-i AB10 2005-2014
Significantly more reliable with the 1KR-FE engine. Avoid the MMT semi-auto. Manual versions have very few known issues.
Kia Picanto 1.0 SA
Kia Picanto 1.0 SA 2004-2011
Simpler and generally more reliable. Timing chain tensioner and crankshaft pulley bolt are the main concerns.
Fiat 500 1.2 Mk1
Fiat 500 1.2 Mk1 2007-2019
Same 1.2 FIRE engine, same mechanical issues. The 500 also suffers EPS and rear spring pan corrosion. Less practical than the Panda.
Fiat Panda 0.9 TwinAir Mk3
Fiat Panda 0.9 TwinAir Mk3 2012-2021
More power but much more complex. MultiAir module and turbo actuator failures add risk the 1.2 FIRE avoids entirely.
