The Grande Punto replaced the Punto Mk2 in 2005, offering a significant step up in size, refinement, and crash safety. The 1.2 FIRE engine is the entry-level petrol: a simple, long-running four-cylinder design with a timing belt and no turbo. With just 65 hp it is slow, but mechanically straightforward and cheap to run. These cars are now 16-20 years old, so condition varies enormously and rust is a serious factor in purchasing decisions.· more· less

Electric power steering failures Corrosion-prone at this age
Buy if: You want the cheapest possible motoring and can find one with intact power steering, no underbody rust, and documented service history.

Common Problems
Cheap to buy and run, but age-related issues are now the main concern
The 1.2 FIRE engine itself is one of Fiat's most durable designs and can comfortably exceed 200,000 km with regular servicing. The main ownership risks are the electric power steering column, ECU vulnerability to ignition coil failure, and the increasing threat of structural corrosion at this age. Cars with documented service history, rust-free underbodies, and working power steering are good prospects. Budget for inspection repairs — at this age, most examples will need something.

Steering shaft upper bolt torque (2008-2009 production, 500,000 vehicles affected) Critical - verify completed
Fuel manifold specification (may leak fuel causing power loss or engine cutout) Verify completed
Brake hose vulcanization defect (may restrict hydraulic fluid flow) Verify completed
Heater/climate control wiring interference with dashboard bracket Verify completed
The steering shaft recall is especially important — it affected 500,000 Grande Puntos and can cause complete loss of steering control. Contact a Fiat dealer with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed.
