The Grande Punto was Fiat's best-selling supermini across Europe from 2005, and the 1.4 8v FIRE is the most popular petrol variant. With 77 hp from a naturally aspirated four-cylinder, it is straightforward and cheap to run. Parts are widely available, insurance groups are low, and the engine itself can exceed 200,000 km with basic upkeep. However, these cars are now 14-21 years old, and corrosion is the dominant ownership concern alongside the well-documented electric power steering column weakness.· more· less

Electric power steering failures Corrosion-prone at this age
Buy if: You want cheap, basic transport and can find one with working power steering, intact front springs, and no structural rust underneath.
Avoid if: You need hassle-free inspections or are considering a Dualogic semi-automatic variant, which is significantly less reliable than the manual.

Common Problems
Simple engine, but condition varies enormously at this age
The 1.4 FIRE engine itself is one of Fiat's most durable designs, with a realistic lifespan well beyond 200,000 km. The main ownership risks lie in the ancillaries and body: the electric power steering column is the most expensive single failure, coil springs snap regularly, and corrosion across the sump, subframe, exhaust, and underbody is a persistent theme at this age. Most issues are well-documented, individually affordable to fix, and can be spotted during a thorough underbody inspection. The car is best suited for buyers who can check the underside carefully or have a trusted mechanic do so.

Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Steering shaft upper joint bolt torque (2008-2009 production, 500,000 vehicles affected) Critical - verify completed
Steering column lower fastening (Mar 2006 - Sep 2007, left-hand drive models) Critical - verify completed
Fuel manifold specification causing fuel leaks (Sep - Oct 2008 production) Verify completed
Brake hose vulcanization defect restricting hydraulic fluid flow Verify completed
Heater/climate control wiring abrasion against dashboard bracket Verify completed
Takata airbag inflator (various Fiat models) Verify completed
The Grande Punto has had multiple steering-related recalls between 2006 and 2009, with the largest affecting 500,000 cars. An improperly torqued or incorrectly profiled steering shaft can cause complete loss of steering control. Contact a Fiat dealer with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years) Expired on all Grande Punto models
Rust perforation warranty (8 years) Expired on all Grande Punto models
All Grande Punto 1.4 models are well outside their original 2-year factory warranty and 8-year rust perforation warranty. Extended warranty options are very limited due to the age of these cars. Third-party warranty providers rarely cover vehicles older than 15 years.

Fiat Punto 1.3 Multijet Grande
Fiat Punto 1.3 Multijet Grande 2005-2009
Diesel variant on the same platform. More economical but adds DPF and EGR concerns for short-trip driving. Timing chain on the 1.3 Multijet is a known weak point.
Opel Corsa 1.2 D
Opel Corsa 1.2 D 2006-2014
Direct competitor with similar EPS issues. Generally better build quality and less corrosion-prone. Timing chain on the Z12XEP engine can stretch and rattle.
Renault Clio III 1.2 16V
Renault Clio III 1.2 16V 2005-2012
Comparable reliability overall. Clio has water ingress to the UPC fuse box causing electrical faults. D4F engine is robust but needs timely timing belt changes.
Fiat Punto 1.4 Evo
Fiat Punto 1.4 Evo 2009-2018
Facelifted successor with the same engine. Identical issues with EPS, corrosion, and springs. Later production means slightly less age-related rust on average.
Ford Fiesta 1.25 Mk6
Ford Fiesta 1.25 Mk6 2002-2008
Older but simpler and generally reliable. The Duratec engine has no timing chain or turbo concerns. Ford parts are cheap and widely available.
