The Punto Mk2 (Type 188) gained the 1.3 Multijet diesel from 2003, making it one of the earliest applications of what became Europe's most widely used small diesel engine. It is frugal, simple compared to later Euro 5 versions (no DPF on this generation), and parts are cheap and widely available. Build quality and corrosion protection are its weakest points.· more· less

Common Problems
Durable engine, but corrosion and age are the main enemies
The 1.3 Multijet engine is one of the most produced diesel engines in Europe and can reach 250,000+ km with proper maintenance. This Euro 3 generation has no DPF to worry about, which removes one common expense. However, the Punto 188 body is corrosion-prone, especially in northern European climates, and structural rust on the sills and subframe is the most likely reason for these cars leaving the road. The timing chain tensioner demands proactive replacement, and the electric power steering column is an expensive common failure. Despite these issues, well-maintained examples with clean bodywork can be economical transport.
