The sportiest Punto Mk2, powered by a 1.8-litre 16-valve engine related to the Alfa Romeo Twin Spark family. The HGT offered genuine performance for a supermini, with a rev-happy engine, uprated brakes and stiffer suspension. Finding a clean example today is the main challenge, as corrosion, hard use, and age have thinned the herd considerably.· more· less

Common Problems
Fun engine, but corrosion is the real enemy
The 1.8 16V engine is robust when maintained, and the variator issue is well-understood with cheap rebuild kits available. The gearbox is the main mechanical concern, with bearing wear being fairly common. However, structural corrosion is the primary threat to any surviving Punto Mk2 HGT. All examples are now 20+ years old, and Fiat's minimal factory corrosion protection means subframes, floor pans, and sumps need careful inspection. A mechanically perfect HGT can still be worthless if the structure underneath has rotted. Budget for underbody assessment before any purchase.

Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Brake pipe corrosion (early production Punto Mk2, particularly salt-belt countries) Verify completed
Steering column upper joint bolt torque (1999-2003 production) Verify completed
Takata airbag inflator (various Fiat models including Punto, produced before 2014) Verify completed
Contact a Fiat dealer with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed. Given the age of these cars, many may have been scrapped without recall work being done. The brake pipe corrosion recall is particularly relevant for cars driven in areas with road salt.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years) Expired on all Punto Mk2 models
Rust perforation warranty (8 years) Expired on all models (last built 2006)
All Punto HGT Mk2 models are well outside their original factory warranty. Extended warranty options are generally not available for cars of this age. Budget for repairs based on the condition of each individual car.
