Fiat's early-2000s compact hatchback powered by one of the most respected diesel engines of its era. The 1.9 JTD unit (available in 80 hp and 115 hp 8-valve versions, later joined by 120-150 hp 16-valve MultiJet variants from 2005) is widely regarded as mechanically durable, with well-maintained examples regularly reaching 250,000 km and beyond. The car itself is spacious and comfortable, designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro, but the Stilo platform is let down by persistent electrical issues and above-average parts costs for its class.· more· less

Common Problems
Strong engine let down by a troublesome platform
The 1.9 JTD engine is the Stilo's saving grace: mechanically robust, fuel-efficient, and capable of high mileages with proper maintenance. The problems lie almost entirely in the car around it. Electrical gremlins are persistent and varied, the climate control system is fragile on automatic-equipped cars, and coil springs have been subject to recall. The DMF is an expensive but predictable wear item. Overall, a well-maintained 1.9 JTD Stilo with documented service history, functioning electrics, and a dry boot can be a reliable and economical daily driver, but expect to spend time troubleshooting intermittent electrical faults.

Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Front suspension spring protective clamps (all Stilo models) Verify completed
Airbag control module software update (various production dates) Verify completed
Fuel system leak risk on early production cars (2001-2002) Verify completed
The Fiat Stilo is now 19-25 years old and recall records may be incomplete. Contact a Fiat dealer with the VIN to check for any outstanding recalls. The front spring recall is particularly important to verify, as spring failure at speed can cause tyre damage.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years) Expired on all Stilos
Rust perforation warranty (8 years) Expired on all Stilos
All Fiat Stilos are well outside their original factory warranty and rust perforation warranty. Third-party used car warranties are available but unlikely to be cost-effective given the car's low value. Budget for repairs directly.
