1999-2010 · 1.2 FIRE 8v (60 hp) 4-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol

One of Europe's most popular budget superminis of the 2000s. The 1.2 FIRE 8v engine has been in production since the 1990s and is mechanically simple, with a non-interference timing belt design that prevents catastrophic engine damage if the belt snaps. Parts are extremely cheap and widely available. The main concerns at this age are structural rust and electrical gremlins.

Non-interference FIRE engine Very cheap parts and repairs
Rust-prone body and subframe EPS steering column failures
Buy if: You want the cheapest possible motoring and can find one with solid bodywork, no rust, and a recent timing belt change.
Avoid if: You live in a salt-belt region or cannot inspect the underside for structural corrosion before buying.

Common Problems
Cheap to fix, but rust is the real killer
The 1.2 FIRE engine is one of the most proven and simple small car engines in Europe. Mechanical repairs are inexpensive and well-documented. The non-interference timing belt design means even worst-case engine failures are survivable. However, the Punto Mk2 is now 15-25 years old, and structural rust is the primary concern. A car with solid bodywork can provide cheap, reliable motoring for years. A car with hidden rust can quickly become uneconomical to repair. Always prioritize a thorough underside inspection over mileage when evaluating a purchase.

Seatbelt pre-tensioner crimping defect (various production dates) Verify completed
Unsuitable space saver spare wheel supplied on alloy-wheeled variants Verify completed
ABS brake compensator spring interference with rear components Verify completed
Contact a Fiat dealer with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed. The brake pipe corrosion recall is particularly important on older cars in salt-belt regions.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years) Expired on all Punto Mk2 models
Rust perforation warranty (8 years) Expired on all Punto Mk2 models
All Fiat Punto Mk2 models are well outside their original 2-year factory warranty and 8-year rust perforation warranty. Third-party extended warranties are available but typically exclude cars over 15 years old. Budget a contingency fund for unexpected repairs instead.
