The sportiest petrol option in the Grande Punto range, the 1.4 T-Jet brought 120 hp from Fiat's first-generation turbocharged FIRE engine (198A4.000). Shared with the Bravo and later the Abarth 500, the engine itself is considered robust for its class, with reported longevity above 200,000 km when properly maintained. The car was only offered with a 5-speed manual gearbox. Main ownership concerns centre on the electric power steering column, corrosion across the sump and subframe, boost system hose degradation, and the usual Fiat electrical gremlins.· more· less

Buy if: You want an affordable turbocharged supermini with a proven engine and can find one with good underbody condition and a working EPS system.
Avoid if: You live in a high-salt region and cannot inspect underneath, or you need a car that will pass inspections without frequent corrosion-related work.

Common Problems
Robust engine let down by corrosion and electrical issues
The 1.4 T-Jet engine itself is one of the more reliable turbocharged units in this price bracket, with documented longevity beyond 200,000 km. However, the Grande Punto platform surrounding it has well-known weaknesses: the electric power steering column is an expensive failure when it goes, corrosion attacks the sump, subframe, and springs aggressively, and boost system hoses degrade with age. Most issues are affordable to fix individually and can be spotted during a thorough inspection. The car is best suited for buyers who can inspect the underbody carefully or have a trusted mechanic do so before purchase.

Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Steering column shaft upper joint (2008-2009 Grande Punto, 500,000 units) Critical - verify completed
Seat belt tensioner crimp fault (2016-2017 late-production Punto) Verify if applicable
Takata airbag inflator (various Fiat models, 2005-2015 production) Verify completed
Contact a Fiat dealer with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed. The 2008-2009 steering column recall is critical: an incorrectly profiled steering shaft joint could allow the column to disconnect from the universal joint, causing complete loss of steering. This was the largest recall in Fiat's history, affecting 500,000 Grande Punto units across Europe.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years) Expired on all Grande Punto models
Rust perforation warranty (8 years) Expired on all models (last T-Jet built 2010)
All Grande Punto 1.4 T-Jet models are well outside their original 2-year factory warranty. Extended warranty options are very limited due to the age of these cars. Budget for repairs based on the risk items above.
