Fiat Panda 1.3 Multijet Mk2

Post-2007 Panda 1.3 Multijet models with the 75 hp engine (169A1000) are fitted with a DPF. Earlier 70 hp versions (188A8000) do not have one. The DPF needs sustained motorway driving (20+ km at speeds above 60 km/h) to regenerate successfully. City-used Pandas rarely meet these conditions, so soot accumulates until the DPF light appears and the car enters limp mode. A forced regeneration at a specialist costs around €100-250, off-car cleaning runs €300-500, and a new DPF costs €800-1,500 fitted. Aftermarket units are available from €400. Removing or disabling the DPF is illegal in EU/EEA markets. If the car does not have a DPF (pre-2007, 70 hp engine), this risk does not apply.

During DPF regeneration, extra diesel is injected post-combustion. If the regeneration is interrupted (engine switched off before completion), unburned fuel drains past the piston rings into the sump. The oil level rises above MAX on the dipstick, oil viscosity drops, and bearing protection is compromised. In extreme cases, the engine can draw oil vapour through the turbo intake and run uncontrollably on its own sump oil (diesel runaway). The Panda's 1.3 Multijet has a butterfly valve in the intake near the EGR that can shut off air supply if the engine is turned off, which provides some protection. However, a runaway event that is not caught in time results in a destroyed engine (€3,000-5,000 for a used engine fitted). Regular oil checks and changing the oil promptly when the level is above MAX (€80-150) prevents escalation. This risk primarily applies to DPF-equipped models (post-2007, 75 hp).

The 1.3 Multijet recirculates exhaust gas through the EGR valve into the intake manifold, where it mixes with oil vapour and forms a thick carbon deposit. Cars doing short trips, missing oil changes, or running on incorrect oil are affected most. Symptoms include engine warning light, loss of power, rough idle, and limp mode. A thorough clean of the EGR valve and intake manifold at a specialist costs €150-250. A new EGR valve part runs €150-250, plus around €100-150 labour. If the intake manifold needs replacement rather than cleaning, the total can reach €600-800. Many Panda owners report that the EGR valve on the 1.3 Multijet is particularly awkward to access, which increases labour time.

The small VGT turbo on the 1.3 Multijet is generally durable, but the wastegate actuator can seize if the car is driven gently for extended periods or does mostly short trips. Carbon deposits from the EGR system coat the actuator mechanism. Symptoms are loss of power, the turbo not building boost, and limp mode. In many cases the actuator rod simply jams in its bore and can be freed with some mechanical persuasion (effectively free if caught early). A replacement actuator unit costs around €150-200 plus labour. If the turbo internals (vanes, bearings) have worn out, a reconditioned turbo runs €400-700 fitted, and a new OEM unit costs €900-1,500. Turbo failure is most common on cars with neglected oil changes or those that have been shut down immediately after hard driving without allowing a cool-down period.

This is a well-known weakness across all Fiat Panda 169 models, shared with the Fiat 500 Mk1. The torque position sensor inside the electric power steering column wears out, typically between 80,000 and 120,000 km. Symptoms include the EPS warning light, steering that becomes heavy, or assistance that cuts in and out unpredictably. A new Fiat column from the dealer costs €800+ plus coding, but specialist repair services across Europe offer refurbished or repaired units for €300-500 with extended warranties and no ECU coding required. Used units from breakers are available but carry the risk of the same failure since it is age-related.

The 1.3 Multijet uses a dual-mass flywheel to damp out diesel vibration. The DMF wears faster than on petrol equivalents because of higher torque and low-rev driving typical of urban diesel use. Symptoms are a rattle at idle that disappears when the clutch pedal is pressed, gear-change judder, and shudder when pulling away. Replacing the DMF is always done together with clutch and release bearing. An independent specialist charges €800-1,100 for the complete job; a Fiat dealer quotes €1,200-1,400. Typical failure mileage is 120,000-180,000 km, but can occur earlier on cars used for frequent stop-start urban driving.

Shared with the petrol Panda 169 and the Fiat 500 Mk1. The rear torsion beam has spring cups (pans) that collect moisture and road salt. The typical failure point is about 20-30 mm from where the pan is welded to the axle frame. Severe corrosion can compromise the spring seating and is a test failure point in periodic vehicle inspections (TUV/MOT). Weld repairs at a specialist cost €100-200. Complete rear axle replacement runs €600-800, though fitting a Fiat 500 axle with rubber spring seats (around €150 from a breaker) is a popular upgrade that also improves ride quality. Preventive treatment with rust converter and underseal when the car is still relatively young extends axle life significantly.

The 1.3 Multijet uses Bosch common-rail injectors that are generally reliable but can develop internal leaks after 150,000-200,000 km, especially on cars run on low-quality diesel. Symptoms are difficult cold starting, rough idle, white smoke, and a diesel smell at the exhaust. A leak-off test (€30-60) identifies the faulty injector. A single remanufactured injector costs €120-180 plus fitting and coding; a full set of four runs €700-1,200. Documented cases of repeated single-injector failures on the same engine suggest that replacing one faulty injector sometimes only delays the failure of the next.
