The Aisin AWF8G45 8-speed torque converter automatic is the only gearbox available on the GP. Owners report intermittent harsh downshifts between 3rd and 4th gear, delayed reverse engagement, and occasional limp mode. The root cause appears to be contaminated fluid clogging valve body actuators. MINI considers the fluid a lifetime fill, but specialists strongly recommend changes every 40,000-60,000 km. This is a documented issue across BMW B46/B48/B58 engines, with a class action lawsuit filed in 2026. Typically manifests between 80,000 and 120,000 km. Repair at an independent specialist costs €800-1,200 including an upgraded aluminium housing where available. At a MINI dealer, the job can run €1,500-2,500 due to labor-intensive access. The internal filter screen on the exhaust camshaft VANOS sprocket bolt can fracture, sending metal debris into the VANOS gear mechanism. This causes the gear to jam, triggering drivetrain fault codes, power loss, rough idle, and potentially limp mode. Typically occurs after 60,000-100,000 km. The repair involves replacing both VANOS cam gears, central valve bolts, and associated gaskets. Some cases require camshaft replacement if debris has scored the journals. Independent specialist cost is typically €900-1,500. If camshafts also need replacement, the bill rises to €2,000-2,500. The F56 upper engine mount uses a fluid-filled rubber design known for premature failure, especially on Cooper S and JCW variants where engine torque is higher. The GP's 306 hp and 450 Nm stress these mounts further. Failure typically presents as increased vibration, clunking on start-up, or visible fluid leaking from the mount body. Some owners report failure as early as 30,000 km. A MINI dealer quotes €800-1,200 for replacement (upper and lower together). Independent specialists charge €400-700. Aftermarket reinforced mounts from brands like Powerflex offer a more durable alternative for around €150-200 in parts plus installation. Well-documented across the entire F56 platform, but the GP's higher output accelerates the timeline.

The JCW GP has significantly stiffer suspension than the standard JCW, with shorter travel and firmer spring rates. This transfers more force into the front lower control arm bushings, which wear faster than on softer-riding F56 variants. Symptoms include knocking over bumps, vague steering feel, and uneven tire wear. Commonly reported between 40,000 and 70,000 km. MINI only sells the complete control arm assembly (not bushings separately) at approximately €300-400 per side plus labor. Independent shops can press in aftermarket polyurethane bushings (Powerflex or similar) for €250-350 total for both sides. A design vulnerability exists where rainwater or washer fluid can run down behind the scuttle panel and soak the main engine wiring harness. Over time this causes corrosion of connector pins and intermittent electrical faults including engine management errors, sensor failures, and lighting issues. The issue was most prevalent on 2014-2018 F56 models. MINI introduced improved drainage and fabric wrapping on later production cars. The 2020 GP uses the revised design with better water management, making this significantly less likely but not impossible given the same basic architecture.
