The entry-level second-generation Mini uses detuned versions of the Prince engine shared with Peugeot and Citroen. Pre-LCI models (2006-2010) use a 1.4L N12, while LCI models (2010-2013) moved to a 1.6L N16 with revised internals. Both are naturally aspirated and mechanically simpler than the turbocharged Cooper S, avoiding its direct injection, turbo, and high-pressure fuel pump problems entirely.· more· less

Buy if: You want the Mini driving experience at the lowest running cost and can find a 2010+ LCI model with complete service history.
Avoid if: You need an automatic gearbox (valve body issues on the Aisin unit) or the car rattles on cold start, indicating timing chain wear.

Common Problems
The most affordable R56, but platform weaknesses remain
The Mini One is the most budget-friendly and least stressed variant of the second-generation Mini. Without a turbo, direct injection, or high-pressure fuel pump, it avoids the most expensive failure modes that plague the Cooper S. The N16 engine (2010-2013 LCI) is the more reliable choice, with revised timing components and better oil management. However, shared platform issues like the power steering pump, valve cover PCV system, and cooling system weak points still apply to all R56 models. With regular oil changes and proactive attention to coolant levels, the One can comfortably reach 200,000 km.

Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Footwell module (FRM) fire risk due to water/salt corrosion causing short circuit (2007-2013) Critical - verify completed
Takata airbag inflator, driver airbag propellant may deteriorate (2007-2013) Verify completed
Seatbelt manufacturing defect, second row seat belts may not restrain properly (various production dates) Verify completed
Contact a Mini dealer with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed. The footwell module fire recall is particularly important on cars driven in regions with road salt. The Takata airbag recall is a safety-critical item. Unlike the Cooper S, the base One is not affected by the auxiliary water pump fire risk recall (that applies only to turbocharged models).
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years) Expired on all R56 models
Rust perforation warranty (12 years) Expired on most models, may apply to late 2013 cars
All Mini One R56 models are well outside their original 2-year factory warranty. The 12-year rust perforation warranty may still apply to the very latest 2013 production cars. No manufacturer-backed extended warranty programs are available for this generation. Third-party warranties exist but often exclude known problem areas like the power steering pump.
