Mini Countryman Cooper D F60

BMW issued a major recall in August 2018 covering EGR coolers on B47 diesel engines, expanded in December 2020 to include F60 Mini Countryman diesels produced 2016-2017, and extended again in 2024. The EGR cooler develops an internal coolant leak where glycol mixes with diesel soot; combined with high exhaust temperatures, this can cause smouldering particles, intake manifold melting, and in rare cases vehicle fires. BMW has acknowledged that earlier corrective parts were inadequate and an optimised cooler from a different supplier has only been used since 2022. If completed under recall, this is free. BMW extended warranty coverage to 15 years for the EGR cooler and consequential damage on affected vehicles. If the recall has not been performed, contact a Mini dealer immediately with the VIN. If consequential intake manifold damage occurred before the recall, replacement costs run €1,000-1,500.

DPF clogging is a well-documented issue on F60 Cooper D models used mainly for short trips or city driving, with owners reporting warning lights, reduced engine power (limp mode), and increased fuel consumption. The filter needs to reach exhaust temperatures of around 600°C during a passive regen, which only happens on sustained motorway driving for 20+ minutes. Symptoms typically appear between 80,000-130,000 km on city-driven cars. Forced regeneration at a specialist costs €150-300. Professional DPF cleaning (removed and ultrasonic cleaned) costs €400-700. If the filter is permanently damaged, an OEM replacement runs €1,500-2,500. Many owners with persistent issues opt for EGR/DPF software remapping (where legal), though this affects emissions compliance and resale value.

The EGR valve on the B47 is prone to clogging with carbon deposits, especially in vehicles used mainly for short trips. Symptoms include rough idling, reduced fuel efficiency, poor acceleration, severe jerking at idle, stalling, and illuminated check engine lights. The EGR valve and cooler share a recall but the valve itself can fail independently. Cleaning the EGR (intake removal, walnut blasting, valve clean) costs €300-450 at a specialist. Replacement of the EGR valve assembly runs €500-900 including labour. Diesel models in particular suffer from dirty EGR valves after 120,000 km, leading to a loss of power. Regular long drives at motorway speeds help reduce buildup.

The F60 Countryman has a well-documented issue with premature engine mount failure across all engine variants. The upper passenger-side mount is the most common failure point, with some lasting only 50,000 km while others reach 110,000 km. The cause is a combination of constant heat from the nearby turbocharger, stress from engine torque, and the design of the fluid-filled hydraulic mount itself. Over time, the rubber cracks, allowing the hydraulic fluid to leak out, causing the mount to collapse and lose its damping properties. Symptoms include excessive vibration at idle, clunking on acceleration/deceleration, and visible cracking of the rubber. The OEM part costs €150-250. Mini dealers have quoted €800-1,300 for the repair including labour; independent specialists charge €400-700.

The B47 engine uses a polycarbonate oil filter housing that acts as a heat exchanger between oil and coolant. Over time, thermal cycling causes the plastic to warp and crack, typically between 80,000-130,000 km. Symptoms include coolant loss without visible external leak, coolant smell, or visible seepage around the housing. The OEM replacement housing is also plastic (around €200 for the part), but aftermarket aluminium upgrades are available for similar cost and are highly recommended. Including labour, expect €600-900 at an independent specialist or €1,000-1,500 at a Mini dealer. If the leak goes unnoticed and coolant mixes with oil, engine damage can escalate costs significantly.

The B47 timing chain is relocated to the front of the engine, addressing the most serious flaw of the older N47 (where rear-mounted chain replacement required engine removal). However, the chain itself is similar in design and stretching has been reported with high mileage. The chain tensioner check valve can weaken over time, allowing oil pressure to bleed off overnight, resulting in a cold-start rattle for the first 1-3 seconds. This typically appears after 150,000-200,000 km with proper oil changes, or earlier if BMW long-life oil change intervals (30,000 km) were followed instead of shorter intervals. Full chain replacement (chain, guides, tensioner, sprockets) costs €1,500-2,000 at an independent specialist or €2,200-2,800 at a Mini dealer. Catastrophic chain failure with valve damage runs €4,000-6,000.

The B47 uses a variable nozzle turbo (VNT) which can fail if oil changes are neglected or short-trip use predominates. The electronic actuator can also stick from carbon buildup. Symptoms include EPC light, limp mode, loss of boost, or whistling/whining noises under load. Issues typically appear between 130,000-180,000 km. Actuator-only replacement or rebuild costs €600-900. Full turbocharger replacement (with new actuator) runs €1,500-2,500 at a specialist, plus €200-400 for ancillary parts (oil feed line, seals). Using long-life synthetic oil at shorter intervals (every 15,000 km instead of 30,000 km) significantly extends turbo life.

F60 Countryman owners commonly report water in the boot or footwell, traced back to blocked sunroof drain holes. The drains can become obstructed by leaves, pollen, or dirt, causing water to overflow into the interior. If caught early, clearing the drains is a 30-minute DIY job. If left unaddressed, water damage to interior electronics (e.g. body control module under the rear seat or in the boot) can cause expensive electrical faults. Periodic cleaning of the drain channels (once a year) prevents this issue. Repair cost is €100-200 if just drain cleaning, but €300-500 if interior carpet or wiring damage has occurred.
