The first-generation Clubman built on the R56 hatch platform with an extended wheelbase, a small left-side rear-hinged 'clubdoor', and signature split rear barn doors. The base Cooper variant uses the BMW/PSA Prince N12 (2007-2010) or revised N16 (2010 LCI onwards) 1.6 naturally aspirated engine. Lacking the turbo, HPFP and direct injection of the Cooper S, it sidesteps several Cooper S weak points but retains the well-known timing chain tensioner issue and a long list of Clubman-specific quirks.· more· less

Avoids HPFP and carbon issues Cheaper to insure than Cooper S

Buy if: You want Mini character with practicality, can verify the timing chain has been done, and accept that several smaller issues are likely.
Avoid if: You need a low-maintenance daily driver or are looking at an unrecorded car with a cold-start rattle and unknown chain history.

Common Problems
Character car with a long list of small bills
The R55 Cooper rewards owners with a unique design and good driving manners but it is not a relaxed car to own. The naturally aspirated N12/N16 avoids the worst of the Cooper S problems (no HPFP, no direct-injection carbon, no turbo) but it inherits the Prince engine's chain, thermostat, water pump and valve cover weaknesses, and the Clubman bodyshell adds split-door, FRM and trim issues on top. The best examples have a documented chain replacement, a metal thermostat upgrade and a careful service history. Expect to spend modestly but often.

Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Footwell module corrosion (recall 23V-337, 2007-2014 R55/R56/R57) Verify completed
Auxiliary electric water pump fire risk (turbocharged variants, related campaigns) Verify if applicable
Front seat side airbag deployment issue (selected production years) Verify completed
Takata airbag inflator replacement (affected production years) Verify completed
Contact a Mini dealer with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed. The 23V-337 footwell module recall is the most relevant for the naturally aspirated Cooper R55.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years) Expired on all R55 Clubmans
Rust perforation warranty (12 years) Expired or close to expiry on all examples
Extended timing chain coverage Not applicable on R55 (BMW programme covered later cars)
Mini offered 2 years factory warranty in the EU. All R55 Clubman Coopers are now well outside that period. The 12-year rust perforation cover is also expired or about to expire. For peace of mind, an aftermarket warranty from a specialist is an option, but read the small print on chain and oil consumption exclusions.
