The first diesel Mini, pairing a Toyota-built 1.4 D4D (1ND-TV) engine with the R50 hatchback shell. Produced from 2003 to 2006 in 75 hp and 88 hp forms, it was a collaboration between BMW and Toyota that produced a genuinely economical small car capable of returning 4.5-5.5 l/100 km. The Toyota engine is more robust than the PSA and BMW diesels that followed in the R56, but the early R50 platform brings its own electrical and steering vulnerabilities.· more· less

Robust Toyota-built diesel engine Excellent fuel economy (4.5-5.5 l/100)
Head gasket weakness on early engines Electric power steering pump failures
Buy if: You want an economical diesel Mini with simpler mechanicals than later generations and can verify the head gasket and power steering pump condition.
Avoid if: You see coolant loss, white exhaust smoke, or the power steering feels inconsistent, as these point to the model's two most expensive repairs.

Common Problems
Solid Toyota engine, but aging R50 platform needs attention
The Toyota 1ND-TV diesel is fundamentally more robust than the PSA or BMW diesels used in later Mini generations. Head gasket issues affect mainly early 2003-2004 production, and most units are capable of exceeding 200,000 km with proper maintenance. The main ownership concerns come from the R50 platform itself: the electric power steering pump, BCM water damage susceptibility, and typical 20-year-old car wear items like suspension bushings. No DPF means no regeneration worries, which is a genuine advantage for urban use over any diesel competitor from 2007 onward.

Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Power steering pump and cooling fan (2002-2005 R50/R53) Verify completed
Head gasket / engine block sealing (early 2003-2004 1ND-TV engines, Toyota-coordinated recall) Critical - verify completed
Takata airbag inflator (2003-2006 models) Verify completed
Contact Mini or a BMW dealer with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed. The head gasket recall for early 1ND-TV engines is particularly important as unrepaired examples risk catastrophic engine damage.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years) Expired on all Mini One D R50 models
Power steering warranty extension (13 years / 240,000 km) Expired on all R50 models
Rust perforation warranty (12 years) Expired on all R50 models
All Mini One D R50 models are well outside any factory or extended warranty coverage. Any remaining repairs are fully owner-funded.

Mini One D R56
Mini One D R56 2010-2013
Successor with BMW N47 diesel. More power but rear-mounted timing chain and EGR cooler fire recall make it potentially more expensive to maintain.
Fiat 500 1.3 Multijet Mk1
Fiat 500 1.3 Multijet Mk1 2007-2020
Similar city-car concept with a diesel. DPF oil-dilution issues make it risky for short trips. The Fiat is newer but not necessarily more reliable.
Volkswagen Polo 1.4 TDI Mk4
Volkswagen Polo 1.4 TDI Mk4 2001-2009
Same-era small diesel competitor. Oil pump chain weakness is the main concern. Generally cheaper parts but less characterful to drive.
Mini Cooper D R56
Mini Cooper D R56 2007-2013
More power but with PSA DV6 (2007-2010) or BMW N47 (2010-2013) diesel, both with more complex issues than the Toyota 1ND-TV.
Smart fortwo 0.8 CDI W451
Smart fortwo 0.8 CDI W451 2007-2014
Smaller diesel city car. Durable engine but the automated gearbox causes frustration and expense. Two-seater limits practicality.
