The first Mini to offer four doors, a usable rear seat, and optional all-wheel drive. The base Cooper uses the naturally aspirated 1.6-litre N16 Prince engine (122 hp), which is simpler and more reliable than the turbocharged variants. Heavier than a standard Mini hatch, which puts extra strain on the clutch and suspension. The 2014 facelift brought updated lights, bumpers, and interior tech.· more· less

No turbo complexity, simpler engine Good parts availability, large community
Timing chain tensioner weakness Heavy for the platform, premature clutch wear
Buy if: You want a compact crossover with Mini character, prefer a naturally aspirated engine, and can verify the timing chain condition on cold start.
Avoid if: You need an automatic gearbox (manual is more reliable here) or mostly do very short urban trips that accelerate carbon buildup and oil contamination.

Common Problems
Simpler than the Cooper S, but platform weaknesses remain
The naturally aspirated N16 engine avoids the turbo, HPFP, and boost-related failures that plague the Cooper S variants. Timing chain tensioner wear is the primary engine concern, particularly on pre-November 2011 cars. The Countryman's heavier weight compared to a standard Mini hatch accelerates clutch and suspension wear. Cooling system plastic components degrade with age and should be inspected proactively. With regular maintenance and attention to the timing chain at cold start, the base Cooper can reach 200,000 km without major engine work.

General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Timing chain tensioner seal (engines produced before November 2011) Verify completed
Auxiliary water pump circuit board overheating/fire risk (2011-2012 Cooper S models) Verify if applicable
Takata airbag inflator (various production dates) Verify with VIN
Contact a Mini dealer with the VIN to verify all recalls and service bulletins have been completed. The timing chain tensioner bulletin is particularly important for cars built before November 2011.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years) Expired on all R60 Countryman models
Rust perforation warranty (12 years) May still apply on 2014-2016 models
Extended warranty Available through Mini dealers and third-party providers
