Mini Countryman Cooper SE F60 (PHEV)

The 5-module high-voltage battery is the single biggest cost risk on this car. Owners report noticeable capacity loss after 2-3 years or 50,000-80,000 km, with electric range dropping 20-35% (often from a real-world 32-35 km new down to 22-25 km). Outright module failure typically appears after 100,000 km. Replacing 3 of 5 modules at a specialist costs around €5,000-5,500; Mini dealer pricing for a full pack is far higher. A 2020 recall covered early production cars where debris during assembly could short-circuit cells. Battery warranty is 6 years / 100,000 km in Europe (8 years / 80,000 miles in North America) with replacement if capacity falls below 70%. Most used buyers are now outside this. Always charge to roughly 80%, avoid leaving the battery at 0% for long periods, and request a state-of-health readout before purchase.

A widely reported PHEV-specific issue. Owners describe drivetrain error messages putting the car into limp mode, sometimes once a month, often after wet weather. Cascading codes can include brake regen fault, parking brake fault, ABS fault, collision detection fault and hybrid drivetrain failure. Root causes vary: in some cases the high-pressure fuel pump, in others a faulty BDC (Body Domain Controller) unit, and many cases trace to the auto shifter or hybrid module software. Dealers often cannot reproduce the fault on basic OBD scans and need to interrogate hybrid-specific modules. A simple reset can clear it for weeks; persistent cases have required BDC replacement, sometimes more than once. Budget €300 for diagnosis, €800-1,500 for software/sensor work, and up to €2,500 for a control unit.

The B38 1.5 three-cylinder inherits the timing chain concerns that affect the BMW B-family of engines. The chain can stretch and the tensioner can lose pressure overnight, causing a distinctive rattle on cold start that lasts a few seconds to half a minute. Typical onset is 80,000-130,000 km, accelerated by long oil change intervals. Catastrophic chain failure causes valve-to-piston contact and engine destruction, so any persistent cold-start rattle must be investigated immediately. After replacement, ensure correct camshaft alignment as Mini engines often log camshaft tolerance faults if the timing is slightly off. Specialist replacement runs €1,200-1,800; dealer pricing approaches €3,000. Switch to a 10,000 km oil change interval as preventive care.

The HPFP is a known weak point on the B38 and a recurring root cause for the drivetrain malfunction warnings on this PHEV. When it fails it can produce a starting fault, rough idle, EPC light and limp mode. Because the petrol engine often runs cold on a PHEV (short use cycles, then handed back to the motor), fuel pump components see less heat soak but more start/stop wear. A 2017-2019 recall addressed a missing crash protection plate near the HPFP that could leak fuel after a collision. Verify this recall is closed. Replacement runs €600-900 at a specialist or €1,000-1,400 at a Mini dealer.

Like other BMW B-series engines, the F60 uses an integrated electric water pump and thermostat housing. The plastic housing can develop weeping coolant leaks, and the electric pump itself fails on a fairly predictable schedule. Symptoms include a coolant warning, reduced cabin heat, or visible drips at the front of the engine. Cost is €500-700 at an independent specialist, €900-1,100 at a Mini dealer. Catching it early avoids overheating damage. With the PHEV's additional cooling loop for the high-voltage battery, also check that loop for leaks during the same service.

The B38 is direct-injected (some later variants add port injection at low load). Carbon deposits build up on the intake valves over time and can cause rough idle, hesitation and minor misfires. The PHEV use case worsens this: short electric trips followed by short petrol-engine sessions mean the engine often runs cool and rich. Walnut-blast cleaning every 80,000-100,000 km is the recognised remedy and costs €400-700 at a specialist. Driving at least one longer petrol-only trip per month at proper temperature helps significantly.

PHEVs put unusual load on the 12 V auxiliary battery because the car is constantly cycling DC-DC and running pre-conditioning. Premature 12 V battery failures (3-5 years) are common; budget €150-250 for a correctly coded AGM replacement. Charging port issues also surface: some owners report intermittent charge sessions that drop out and require unplugging/replugging. Replacement of the on-board charger if it fails outright runs €500-600. Always inspect the Type 2 inlet for corrosion or bent pins.

Many F60 owners report popping or creaking sounds from the A and C pillars when the cabin warms up, described as similar to bubble wrap. The cause is plastic trim panels expanding against each other. Most dealers will reseat or shim the trim under goodwill if the car is in warranty; outside warranty, a specialist trim job runs €100-200. Not safety-critical, but a quality irritation widely reported across the model. Doors, dashboard and rear cargo trim are the usual culprits.
