Compact premium PHEV crossover combining a BMW B38 1.5 three-cylinder petrol turbo with a rear-axle electric motor for through-the-road AWD. Launched in 2017 with a 7.6 kWh battery, then upgraded to 9.6-10 kWh in the 2020 LCI facelift. Real-world electric range is 25-35 km depending on temperature, well below the WLTP figure. Premium cabin and brand feel Through-road AWD without diesel costs
High-voltage battery module failures Recurring drivetrain fault messages
Buy if: You want a small premium PHEV with AWD, can charge at home daily, and have verified the hybrid battery health plus the 2020 battery fire recall on early build cars.
Avoid if: You cannot home-charge, mostly drive long highway distances (the petrol engine then hauls a heavy battery for no benefit), or you find any drivetrain or hybrid warning history on the vehicle.

Common Problems
Two systems, two repair bills - PHEV complexity adds real cost
The Cooper SE F60 layers a high-voltage hybrid system on top of a B38 petrol engine that already has its own known weak points (timing chain, HPFP, water pump, carbon). The combined system means more sensors, more software, more cooling circuits, and a battery pack that ages independently of mileage. Most reported issues are not catastrophic, but the drivetrain malfunction warnings are widespread enough that any used example must be checked thoroughly with a hybrid-capable scan tool. Battery state-of-health is the single most important data point before purchase.

Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Hybrid battery module fire risk from manufacturing debris (2020 Cooper SE ALL4) Critical - verify completed
Loose welding beads in hybrid battery cells (2020 Cooper SE ALL4) Critical - verify completed
Missing crash protection plate near HPFP (2017-2019 Countryman, recall 18V557000) Verify completed
Takata airbag inflator (various build dates) Verify completed
Contact a Mini dealer with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed. The 2020 hybrid battery fire-risk recalls are the most important and were significant enough that owners were told not to charge their vehicles until inspection.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years from new, +1 year extension from late 2016) Expired on all used examples
High-voltage battery warranty (6 years / 100,000 km Europe) Expired on most pre-2020 cars
Mini approved used extended warranty Available through Mini dealers
Rust perforation warranty (12 years) May still apply on 2017+ cars
Battery warranty has 70% capacity floor. If you can find a car still within the 6-year HV battery warranty window, the value gain is significant given module replacement costs.
