The original BMW-era Mini revived the iconic nameplate with genuine driving fun in a compact package. Built from 2001 to 2006, the R50 uses the Chrysler/Tritec W10 1.6-litre four-cylinder with a cast iron block, a straightforward and generally durable engine. The go-kart handling and retro styling made it an instant classic, and it remains one of the more entertaining city cars of its era.· more· less

Common Problems
Characterful but needs attentive ownership
The R50 Mini Cooper is fundamentally sound thanks to its simple, cast-iron Tritec engine, which can reach 200,000+ km with proper care. However, the ancillaries around the engine are less robust: the power steering pump, cooling system, and suspension bushings all require attention. Post-July 2004 cars with the Getrag gearbox avoid the worst transmission issues. Budget for the power steering pump replacement as a near-certainty, keep the cooling system well maintained, and address oil leaks promptly. With a knowledgeable specialist, the R50 is a manageable and rewarding car to own.

Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Power steering pump overheating/failure (2002-2005, US recall only, not recalled in Europe) Verify if applicable
Front passenger seat occupant detection mat (2005-2006 models) Verify completed
Takata airbag inflator (various production years) Verify with VIN
The power steering pump recall was issued in the US but not in Europe. Contact Mini/BMW with the VIN to verify all applicable recalls have been completed. Given the age of these cars, checking for outstanding recalls is especially important.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years) Expired on all R50 models
Rust perforation warranty (12 years) Expired on all R50 models
All Mini Cooper R50 models are well outside their original 2-year factory warranty and 12-year rust perforation warranty. No manufacturer-backed extended warranty is available for cars of this age. Consider a third-party warranty if the car is in good condition, but read exclusions carefully.
