The first BMW-era supercharged Mini, built from 2002 to 2006 with an Eaton M45 blower on a Tritec-derived 1.6-litre engine. Compact, light, and with direct go-kart handling, the R53 remains one of the most involving small cars of its era. Later 2005-2006 models (170 hp) have improved ECU mapping and a revised supercharger and are generally more dependable than early cars.· more· less

Common Problems
Dependable engine, but peripheral systems need regular attention
The Tritec-based W11 engine block itself is robust and does not suffer from the catastrophic timing chain failures seen in the later R56. However, the supercharger system, cooling components, power steering pump, and various oil seals all need monitoring. Most issues are well-documented and affordable individually, but they can stack up on neglected cars. Later 2005-2006 models with complete service history and a supercharger oil change on record are the best bets. Budget for a power steering pump replacement and at least one cooling system refresh over a 10-year ownership period.
