Mini One R50

Pre-facelift Mini Ones (2001 to mid-2004) were fitted with the Rover-derived Midlands five-speed gearbox (casting GS5-65BH), which has a well-documented history of bearing failures. The pinion bearing and lay gear front bearing are most commonly affected. Early symptoms include a whining noise in certain gears and difficulty engaging first or third. If caught early, a rebuild with new bearings and seals costs around €600-800 at a specialist. If the bearings collapse fully and damage the gear shafts, a reconditioned gearbox fitted runs €1,200-1,800. Facelift models from mid-2004 onwards received the significantly more reliable Getrag five-speed (casting GS5-52BG). Some owners of pre-facelift cars have converted to the Getrag unit, which requires matching driveshafts, flywheel, and shifter box.

The electro-hydraulic power steering (EHPS) pump is a well-known weak point on all 2001-2006 R50 models. Symptoms include heavy steering, inconsistent assistance, and a whining noise from the pump. The pump motor or its cooling fan fails, sometimes due to contaminated fluid. In North America, Mini extended the warranty to 13 years/150,000 miles and later issued a recall for 86,000 cars (2002-2005 models). In Europe, no equivalent recall was issued. Replacement costs €400-800 depending on whether a new or reconditioned pump is used. When replacing the pump, the power steering fluid should always be flushed as old contaminated fluid will damage the new pump.

The body control module (BCM) is located in the passenger side footwell, directly in the path of water that enters through deteriorated A-pillar seals or clogged sunroof drainage tubes. Early cars (2001-2003) are especially susceptible. When water reaches the BCM, it can cause a wide range of intermittent electrical faults: central locking malfunctions, instrument cluster errors, window motor issues, and warning lights. Many early cars were repaired under warranty, but unrepaired examples still exist. The BCM itself can be repaired or cloned by specialists for €200-300, but a full dealer replacement with coding runs €800-1,200. The root cause (seal replacement, drain clearing) must be fixed first to prevent repeat damage.

The cooling system uses plastic components that become brittle with age and heat cycling. The thermostat housing is a common failure point, developing cracks that cause coolant leaks near the bellhousing area. The water pump can also fail with internal seal deterioration. Symptoms include low coolant warnings, visible coolant puddles, and eventual overheating if ignored. Replacing the thermostat housing and water pump together is recommended when either fails, as they typically deteriorate at similar rates. Parts cost €100-200 for both components; total repair including labor runs €350-800 depending on the shop.

Oil leaks are one of the most common issues on high-mileage R50 models. The front crankshaft seal (behind the crank damper), valve cover gasket, timing cover gaskets, and sump gasket all deteriorate over time. The crank position sensor O-ring is another frequent leak point. Most of these are inexpensive seals (€10-30 each) but labor varies significantly because some are difficult to access. The front crank seal requires bumper and radiator support removal. Valve cover gasket is more accessible. A car dripping oil is not necessarily facing an expensive repair, but multiple simultaneous leaks are common on cars over 15 years old and the combined labor adds up to €200-600.

The first-generation Mini has a reputation for clutch wear that exceeds what the mileage alone would suggest. Some owners report clutch replacement needed between 60,000 and 100,000 km, particularly on cars used primarily in city traffic. Symptoms include shuddering on engagement, a high bite point, and slipping under load. A clutch kit with flywheel resurfacing costs €500-1,000 fitted at an independent specialist. The labor is straightforward on the R50 compared to later Mini models. Using the correct fluid and avoiding riding the clutch extends lifespan significantly.

The rubber door seals on R50 models trap moisture against the metal door sills, causing corrosion that starts from spot welds and seam edges. This is hidden by the rubber seal and plastic sill covers, so it often goes unnoticed until advanced. The rear wheel arches and area around the boot handle can also develop surface corrosion. Repair cost depends heavily on severity: surface rust treatment and resealing costs €200-400, while structural repair of badly corroded sills can reach €600-800 per side. Cars from salt-heavy climates (northern Europe, coastal areas) are most affected.
