The first-generation BMW Mini One is the entry-level version of the car that revived the Mini brand. It uses the same 1.6-litre Tritec W10 engine as the Cooper, detuned to 90 hp via throttle software limitation. Mechanically simple with no turbo, no direct injection, and a timing chain rather than a belt. Pre-facelift models (2001-2004) came with the fragile Midlands five-speed gearbox; post-facelift cars (2004-2006) received the more reliable Getrag unit.· more· less

Buy if: You want a fun city car with character and can find a post-2004 facelift model with a manual Getrag gearbox and documented maintenance history.
Avoid if: You are considering a pre-facelift model with the Midlands gearbox or a CVT automatic, as both have serious reliability concerns.

Common Problems
Simple engine, but age-related issues accumulate
The Tritec W10 engine is fundamentally robust and can exceed 200,000 km with basic maintenance. The main concerns are around the car rather than the engine: the pre-2004 Midlands gearbox is a known weak point, the power steering pump has a high failure rate, and water ingress can cause expensive electrical damage. Post-2004 facelift models with the Getrag gearbox and verified steering pump history are significantly less risky. Oil leaks and cooling system work should be expected as maintenance on any car of this age.
