The entry-level diesel in the third-generation Mini hatchback, powered by BMW's B37 1.5-litre three-cylinder turbodiesel detuned to 95 hp and 220 Nm. Shares its engine architecture with the Cooper D (116 hp) and the BMW 116d. Real-world fuel consumption of around 3.5-4.2 l/100 km makes it one of the most frugal options in the small car segment. Offered only with a 6-speed manual gearbox.· more· less

Common Problems
Diesel emissions system needs monitoring, but the engine is fundamentally sound
The B37 three-cylinder diesel is a reliable engine at its core, with potential lifespans exceeding 200,000 km when properly maintained. However, the diesel-specific emissions hardware (EGR, DPF, swirl flaps) and the fuel pressure sensor wicking issue add layers of complexity that the petrol variants do not have. Engine mount failure is the most universally reported issue across all F56 variants. Cars used primarily for motorway and cross-country driving with complete service histories are the best prospects. Short-trip urban driving is the most damaging usage pattern for this engine.
