The largest Mini available, sharing BMW's UKL2 platform with the X1 F48. The base Cooper uses the B38 1.5-litre three-cylinder turbo producing 136 hp through the front wheels only. A significant step up in reliability compared to older Mini models, though the B38 brings its own set of concerns around engine mounts, timing chain tensioner wear, and carbon buildup from direct injection.· more· less

Common Problems
Reliable by Mini standards, but engine mounts and timing chain need watching
The F60 Countryman Cooper with the B38 engine is one of the most reliable Minis ever built, a significant improvement over the N14/N18 era. The main concerns are premature engine mount wear (very common, but not expensive), timing chain tensioner behaviour at higher mileages (less common but costly), and carbon buildup from direct injection. Early 2017 models carry additional risk from the injector dripping issue. Owners who maintain shorter oil change intervals (10,000 km) and include occasional spirited driving to keep carbon and turbo deposits in check report the fewest problems. Most examples comfortably exceed 150,000 km with proper care.

Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Missing crash protection plate near high-pressure fuel pump (1.5 petrol, Jan-May 2018 production) Verify completed
Front suspension swivel bearing manufacturing fault (Apr-May 2018 production) Verify completed
Front suspension tie rod assembly error (Mar-Apr 2019 production) Verify completed
Takata airbag inflator replacement (affected production dates vary) Verify completed
Contact a Mini dealer with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed. The fuel pump crash protection plate recall is particularly important for 2018 models, as a missing plate poses a fire risk in a collision.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (3 years from Nov 2016) Expired on most used F60 models
Rust perforation warranty (12 years) May still apply on 2017-2024 models
Extended warranty Available through Mini dealers
Mini extended its EU warranty to 3 years (2+1 programme) from November 2016, covering all F60 models from new. Most used Countryman F60 models on the market will be outside this warranty. Third-party extended warranties are available but check exclusions carefully, particularly for engine mounts, which are sometimes classified as wear items.
