The entry-level diesel in the second-generation Mini hatchback. Introduced in 2010 with the R56 LCI facelift, it uses BMW's own N47C16A engine rather than the PSA DV6 found in earlier Cooper D models. The 90 hp output and modest torque suit urban and commuter driving, and fuel consumption of 3.8-4.5 l/100 km keeps running costs low. The engine shares its architecture with the larger N47D20 found in BMW 1 and 3 Series, which means it inherits some of that platform's known weak points.· more· less

Excellent fuel economy (3.8-4.5 l/100) Go-kart handling in a diesel package
N47 timing chain mounted at rear EGR cooler fire risk recall
Buy if: You want a fuel-efficient Mini with diesel economy for commuting and can verify the EGR cooler recall has been completed and the timing chain has no rattle on cold start.
Avoid if: You mostly make short urban trips (DPF and EGR will clog) or cannot budget for a potential timing chain replacement at specialist rates.

Common Problems
Reliable if maintained, but timing chain and DPF need monitoring
The Mini One D R56 is a capable small diesel commuter when used for its intended purpose: regular motorway and A-road driving with consistent servicing. The BMW N47C16A engine is a proven unit in low-stress 90 hp form, and many examples exceed 150,000 km without major issues. The two most important concerns are the rear-mounted timing chain (listen carefully on cold start) and the DPF (verify the car has been used for regular longer drives). The EGR cooler recall must be verified as completed. Short-trip urban use dramatically increases the risk of expensive emissions-related repairs.

Takata airbag inflator (various production dates) Verify with VIN
The EGR cooler recall is critical and affects all R56 diesel models with the N47 engine. Contact Mini with the VIN to verify both recalls have been completed. The EGR cooler will be replaced with an optimized version free of charge if not already done.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years) Expired on all Mini One D R56 models
Rust perforation warranty (12 years) May still apply on 2013 models until 2025
All Mini One D R56 models (2010-2013) are outside their original 2-year factory warranty. Mini offered a 2+1 year warranty from November 2016 onwards, but this does not apply retroactively to the R56 generation. Extended warranty options may be available through Mini dealers or third-party providers.
