Opel revived the Frontera name for its new affordable compact SUV, built on the Stellantis Smart Car platform shared with the Citroen C3 Aircross Mk2. The Hybrid 136 pairs a revised 1.2-litre three-cylinder turbo (Gen3, now with timing chain instead of the problematic wet belt) with a 48V mild-hybrid system and a new e-DCS6 dual-clutch gearbox co-developed with Punch Powertrain. Available as a 5- or 7-seater, it targets families seeking an affordable crossover.· more· less

Common Problems
Improved engine, but new gearbox and hybrid system need proving
The Gen3 1.2 turbo engine is a genuine improvement over the older PureTech: the timing chain eliminates the most feared failure mode, and early oil consumption data is encouraging. However, the e-DCS6 dual-clutch gearbox is a first-generation component with growing reports of jerky behavior and early failures. The 48V hybrid system has triggered a major multi-brand recall over fire risk. Multiple recalls in the first 18 months of production are typical of new platforms but require careful verification before purchase. Most mechanical concerns centre on the gearbox rather than the engine.

Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
48V belt starter generator fire risk, insufficient clearance with exhaust filter (KV7, July 2024 - December 2025 production) Critical - verify completed
Fuel high-pressure hose leak due to loose nuts, fire risk (KUU, July 2024 - April 2025 production) Critical - verify completed
Power steering harness chafing causing loss of steering and fire risk (KV9, March - May 2025 production) Verify completed
Front camera module incorrect coding, warning messages not displayed (KVU, 2024-2025 production) Verify completed
Brake pedal pushrod fracture risk, 388 vehicles (KUX, June - August 2025 production) Verify completed
The Opel Frontera has had an unusually high number of recalls for a new model. Contact an Opel dealer with the VIN to verify ALL recalls have been completed. Pay particular attention to the fire-related recalls (KV7 and KUU), which are safety-critical.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years) Active on most used examples (model launched mid-2024)
Powertrain coverage Included in 2-year factory warranty, no separate extended option
Rust perforation warranty (8 years) Active on all current examples
48V battery Covered under standard 2-year warranty. No separate hybrid battery warranty.
Most Fronteras on the used market are still within their 2-year factory warranty. However, Opel's 2-year warranty is among the shortest in Europe. Given the number of recalls and the newness of the platform, consider purchasing an extended warranty if available through your dealer.
