The Hydra-Matic 8L45 is known across GM applications for shift quality complaints: hard 1-2 upshifts, torque converter shudder, hesitation off the line, and occasional no-move conditions. GM issued a TSB updating the valve body calibration and recommending the blue-label Mobil 1 synthetic HP fluid (Dexron HP LV). On the GSi, symptoms typically appear between 60,000-100,000 km. A fluid flush and software update costs €400-600 and resolves many cases. Valve body replacement runs €1,200-1,800. Complete gearbox overhaul or replacement can reach €3,000-3,500. Verify the latest software calibration has been applied.

The GKN Twinster system uses two electronically controlled clutch packs at the rear to distribute torque between rear wheels independently. The clutch packs and their actuators are subject to wear, particularly on cars driven hard or used for towing. Symptoms include shuddering during acceleration in corners, jerking on start-up, and uneven power distribution. Fluid changes every 60,000 km help, but the system is not widely serviced outside Opel dealers. Clutch pack rebuild costs €1,500-2,500 at specialists. Full Twinster unit replacement is €3,500-4,000.

A recall (built 2 May 2017 - 21 February 2019) addresses the turbo oil return pipe, which can crack and allow oil to contact hot exhaust components, creating a fire risk. Verify with Opel that the recall has been completed using the VIN. Beyond the recall, the turbocharger itself can develop oil seal degradation by 100,000+ km, particularly if oil changes have been deferred. Pipe replacement under recall is free; out-of-recall pipe replacement is €400-700. Turbo replacement runs €1,200-1,800.

The B20NFT uses direct injection, which means fuel never washes the intake valves. Carbon deposits accumulate over time, causing rough idle, reduced power, slight misfires, and occasionally check-engine lights. Symptoms typically appear after 60,000-80,000 km. Walnut blasting of the intake valves removes the deposits and restores performance; the procedure costs €300-500 at specialists. Using quality fuel (98 RON) and avoiding only short trips helps slow buildup but does not prevent it entirely. Plan for a carbon clean every 80,000-100,000 km.

FlexRide uses continuously variable dampers from ZF Sachs that adjust to road conditions and driving mode. These dampers can leak or lose electronic adjustment over time. The parts are only supplied through Opel dealers (not aftermarket), so replacement costs are high. A single OEM damper costs €400-450; replacing all four with labour runs €2,500-3,200. Some owners convert to aftermarket coilovers (KW or Bilstein, around €1,200-1,500) as a cheaper permanent fix, though this disables the adaptive function.

The GSi's Brembo front setup uses 345mm vented discs with 4-piston aluminium calipers. The performance brakes wear faster than standard Insignia brakes, particularly on cars used for spirited driving. Front pads typically need replacement every 30,000-40,000 km (€180-280). Discs warp or wear thin within 60,000-80,000 km. OEM front discs are around €220-280 each; aftermarket alternatives are about half that. A full front brake job (pads + discs) at an independent specialist costs €600-900; at a dealer with OEM Brembo parts it runs €1,000-1,400.

A recall covers 2017-2018 production where defective sealing on the central locking control unit can allow moisture penetration, causing short-circuits and potential melting. Verify with Opel that the recall work has been completed. Beyond the recall, door lock micro-switches occasionally fail with age, causing intermittent locking issues. Replacement is straightforward at a specialist for €300-400; dealer work is €500-700.
