2007-2013Last reviewed: May 2026 · How this report is builtMay 2026

2007-2013 · 1.6 Turbo Z16LER/A16LER (192 hp) 4-cylinder turbocharged petrol

The hottest Corsa D variant, with a 1.6-litre turbocharged four-cylinder producing 192 hp and up to 266 Nm on overboost. Fast and agile, it was a popular affordable hot hatch in Europe. The Z16LER engine uses a timing belt (not chain) and drives through a Getrag M32 six-speed manual gearbox. Both the engine and gearbox have well-documented weak points that any buyer must be aware of.

Affordable performance car Strong tuning potential
Piston 4 cracking risk M32 gearbox bearing wear
Buy if: You want an affordable hot hatch and can find one with documented service history, no cold-start misfires, and a quiet gearbox.
Avoid if: You hear any misfiring or smoking at idle, the gearbox whines at highway speeds, or the car has been aggressively remapped without supporting modifications.

Common Problems
Fun but demanding - know the weak points before buying
The Corsa OPC is an entertaining hot hatch, but the piston 4 issue and M32 gearbox bearing wear are serious concerns that require an informed buyer. Most problems are well-documented and can be diagnosed before purchase. A compression test, gearbox noise check at highway speeds, and ABS brake test should be mandatory before buying. Cars with complete service history, regular oil changes with quality oil, and no evidence of aggressive remapping tend to be the most reliable. Budget for the M32 bearing upgrade even on healthy cars, as it is a matter of when rather than if.

Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years) Expired on all Corsa OPC D models
Rust perforation warranty (12 years) Expired or expiring on all models
All Corsa OPC D models are well outside their original 2-year factory warranty. Third-party warranty providers may still offer coverage, but typically exclude pre-existing conditions like M32 gearbox noise or piston compression issues.

↔ Also consider

Opel Corsa D 1.4 2006-2014 Same platform without the turbo. Avoids the piston 4 and M32 issues entirely. Much cheaper to run but a completely different driving experience. Ford Fiesta ST Mk7 2012-2017 Newer, better-handling competitor. The 1.6 EcoBoost has cooling system concerns but no equivalent of the piston 4 problem. SEAT Ibiza Cupra 6J 1.4 TSI 2009-2017 Twin-charged 1.4 TSI is complex. Timing chain tensioner and supercharger chain are weak points. DSG adds further risk if equipped. Opel Corsa E 1.4 2014-2019 Next generation with naturally aspirated 1.4. Simpler and more reliable, but no OPC variant was offered with this engine. Renault Clio RS 200 2006-2012 Turbocharged 1.6L is more durable than the OPC's turbo engine. Dual-clutch gearbox is the main ownership wildcard.
