2004-2010Last reviewed: May 2026 · How this report is builtMay 2026

2004-2010 · 1.9 CDTI (100-150 hp) Fiat/GM 4-cylinder turbodiesel

The Astra H was Opel's best-selling compact of the 2000s, and the 1.9 CDTI was its most powerful diesel option. The engine is a Fiat/GM co-developed unit available in 100, 120, and 150 hp variants, known for strong torque and good fuel economy. The 120 hp 8-valve (Z19DT) is the more reliable choice; the 150 hp 16-valve (Z19DTH) adds swirl flap and DMF problems. Parts are widely available and cheap across Europe.

Strong torque and economy Cheap parts, widely available
DMF and M32 gearbox weakness Swirl flaps fail on 150 hp variant
Buy if: You want a torquey, economical diesel commuter with the 120 hp 8-valve engine and can verify the timing belt and gearbox bearings are in good order.
Avoid if: You are looking at a 150 hp variant with unknown service history, or you mainly drive short urban trips where the DPF will clog.
Expected Annual Maintenance Costs

Common Problems
Torquey diesel with some well-known weak points
The 1.9 CDTI engine block itself is durable, with many examples exceeding 200,000 km without major internal engine issues. However, the ancillary components carry more risk than the Isuzu 1.7 CDTI: the M32 gearbox bearing, DMF, and swirl flaps (150 hp only) are the main concerns. The 120 hp 8-valve Z19DT is the safer choice, avoiding swirl flap issues and being gentler on the DMF and gearbox. Cars with complete service history, documented timing belt replacements, and predominantly motorway use are significantly more dependable.
