The range-topping petrol in the first-generation Insignia, positioned between the 1.6 Turbo and the 2.8 V6 OPC. Pre-facelift cars (2008-2013) use the A20NHT engine producing 220 hp, while the 2013 facelift introduced the A20NFT with 250 hp. Both are direct-injection, twin-scroll turbo four-cylinders with timing chain drive. Available as FWD or 4x4 (Haldex AWD), with a 6-speed manual (M32) or 6-speed Aisin automatic (AF40). Opel parts are affordable and widely available across Europe.· more· less

Common Problems
Below-average reliability requires careful inspection and maintenance
The A20NHT engine (2008-2013) has a documented reputation as one of the less reliable units in the Insignia range, with timing chain, oil leak, and throttle body issues being the most common concerns. The A20NFT (2013 onward) is improved but shares some weaknesses, particularly around timing chain guides. The 4x4 variants add Haldex AWD complexity. Positive aspects include affordable parts, widely available independent expertise across Europe, and strong performance for the price. A well-maintained example with documented service history and preventive timing chain work can provide reliable service, but budget allocation for repairs is important.

Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Rear track rod corrosion (December 2007 - July 2013 production) Verify completed
ECU software update for medium-load engine stuttering (A20NHT) Verify completed
ABS control unit software update (brake performance, ~200,000 vehicles, 2022 recall) Verify completed
Contact an Opel dealer with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed. The rear track rod recall is particularly important for pre-2013 cars, as corroded rods can break and cause loss of control.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years) Expired on all Insignia A models
Rust perforation warranty (12 years) Expired on pre-2014 models, check remaining cars
All first-generation Insignias are well outside their original 2-year factory warranty. Opel's 12-year rust perforation warranty may still cover some later production cars (2014-2017), but body panel rust is not a major issue on this model.
