Known Issues most common first
ECU moisture ingress and failure (Denso unit) €300 - 1,500
Denso ECU casing corrodes, allowing water to damage internal circuits · more· less
The 1.7 CDTI uses a Denso engine control unit mounted in the engine bay. Over time, the factory ECU housing corrodes and cracks, losing its seal. Moisture enters and causes short circuits, injector circuit errors, hard starting, misfiring, or complete engine immobilisation. About 90% of injector fault codes on this engine trace back to ECU failure rather than actual injector problems. A refurbished ECU costs around 250-350 euro; a new OEM unit runs 1,000-1,500 euro but is often unavailable through official channels. Specialist ECU repair shops can sometimes fix the unit for 200-400 euro. Most commonly affects cars over 8-10 years old, especially those stored outdoors in wet climates.
Turbocharger failure €800 - 2,000
Variable geometry turbo vanes stick or wear, causing loss of power and limp mode · more· less
The variable geometry turbocharger (VGT) on the 1.7 CDTI can develop sticking vanes, particularly on cars driven gently or mainly on short trips. Symptoms include loss of power above 50-60 mph, black smoke, and intermittent limp mode that clears after a restart. The boost control solenoid is often the first suspect and costs only 50-80 euro to replace. If the turbo itself has worn internals, replacement runs 800-1,200 euro with a remanufactured unit or up to 2,000 euro for OEM. Turbo lifespan on this engine is typically 100,000-150,000 km. Vacuum pipe leaks can mimic turbo failure, so always check hoses and solenoid first.
DPF clogging (post-2007 Euro 4/5 models) €400 - 1,200
Diesel particulate filter blocks up from short trips and failed regeneration cycles · more· less
DPF-equipped Astra H 1.7 CDTI models (primarily 2007 onwards) suffer from filter clogging when driven mainly on short urban trips, as the exhaust never reaches the temperature needed for passive regeneration. Some owners report regeneration cycles every 110-130 km, which is abnormally frequent and indicates a partially blocked filter. Professional DPF cleaning costs 200-400 euro. If the filter is beyond recovery, replacement runs 600-1,200 euro including fitting. Regular motorway driving of 20+ minutes helps prevent this issue. Euro 5 models (110/125 hp from late 2009) have more problematic DPF systems than earlier Euro 4 variants.
EGR valve clogging €200 - 600
Carbon deposits cause the EGR valve to stick, resulting in rough idle and power loss · more· less
The exhaust gas recirculation valve on the 1.7 CDTI clogs with carbon deposits over time, particularly on cars doing frequent short trips or using lower-quality diesel. Symptoms include rough idle, reduced power, increased fuel consumption, and engine management warning light. The valve is awkward to access on the 1.7 (bolted below the intake manifold) and unlike the 1.9 CDTI, cannot easily be separated for cleaning once removed. A new EGR valve costs around 100-150 euro, with labor adding 100-250 euro depending on the workshop. Running premium diesel (such as Shell V-Power) helps keep the EGR and inlet manifold cleaner. Typically becomes an issue between 80,000-120,000 km.
M32 gearbox bearing wear (125 hp variant only) €500 - 1,200
6th gear bearing wears causing whining noise in 5th and 6th gears · more· less
The 125 hp Z17DTR variant uses the Getrag M32 6-speed gearbox, which has a well-documented bearing weakness. The 5th/6th output shaft end bearing wears prematurely due to inadequate lubrication in the original design. Symptoms start as a subtle whining noise in 6th gear that progressively worsens and spreads to 5th gear. If left unaddressed, the bearing can collapse completely, causing severe internal damage. A specialist bearing replacement using upgraded bearings costs 500-700 euro. Full gearbox rebuild runs 800-1,200 euro. GM addressed this in mid-2012 with larger bearings (62 mm vs 55 mm) and improved oil galleries, but the Astra H was already out of production by then. The 100 hp variant with F23 5-speed gearbox is not affected.
Glow plug and relay failure €100 - 400
Failed glow plugs or relay cause difficult cold starting, especially in winter · more· less
Cold start problems are common on the 1.7 CDTI, most often caused by one or more failed glow plugs or a defective glow plug relay. The glow plug warning light may not illuminate at all, or the engine cranks excessively before starting. Individual glow plugs cost 15-30 euro each, but they can seize in the cylinder head, making removal difficult and potentially expensive. The relay costs around 30-50 euro. Total repair cost including labor is typically 100-250 euro if plugs come out cleanly, but can reach 400 euro if extraction is difficult. Testing should be done with a multimeter checking resistance and continuity.
Oil pump sprocket nut loosening €200 - 800
Retaining nut works loose, causing oil pressure loss and timing belt-driven pump slip · more· less
A known design weakness where the oil pump sprocket retaining nut can work itself loose over time. If this happens, the oil pump stops spinning properly with the timing belt, causing intermittent oil pressure loss. Symptoms include the oil warning light flickering and a grating noise from the timing area. If caught early, retorquing the nut during a timing belt service is straightforward. If the pump shaft or body is damaged from running loose, replacement of the oil pump assembly costs 400-800 euro including labor. This issue is most likely to be discovered during routine timing belt replacement.
Subframe mounting point corrosion €300 - 1,000
Design flaw traps mud and water at the front subframe mounts, causing structural rust · more· less
The front subframe mounting points on the Astra H have a design that acts as a natural debris collector with poor drainage. Mud and water accumulate, causing corrosion that can eventually compromise the structural integrity of the mounting points. In severe cases, the bolt needs to be cut out and the mounting area welded and reinforced, costing 500-1,000 euro. Rear wheel arch rust is also common. This is particularly relevant for cars in northern European climates or those that have not been regularly undersealed. Annual inspection and preventive Waxoyl treatment can significantly slow progression.
Reliable engine, but diesel complexity adds risk points
The Isuzu-derived 1.7 CDTI is one of the more robust diesel engines of its era, with many examples exceeding 200,000 km on the original engine. The main ownership risks center around diesel-specific components (DPF, EGR, turbo) and the Denso ECU moisture vulnerability. The 100 hp variant with F23 5-speed gearbox is the safer choice; the 125 hp variant adds M32 gearbox bearing risk. Cars with documented timing belt changes and regular motorway use tend to be far more trouble-free.
Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
+ 5 more checksShow less
  • Check DPF soot loading percentage
With a diagnostic tool, read the DPF soot level. Over 70-80% indicates a struggling filter that may need expensive attention.
  • Inspect front subframe mounting points for corrosion
Look underneath for rust at the subframe mounts. The design traps water and debris. Severe corrosion is an MOT/TUV failure point.
  • Test all glow plugs with cold start
In cold weather, the glow plug light should illuminate and the engine should start within 2-3 seconds of cranking. Excessive cranking suggests failed plugs.
  • Check rear wheel arches for rust bubbling
Common corrosion area on the Astra H. Lift any mud flaps and inspect the inner arch lips.
  • Run the engine to full temperature and check for turbo limp mode
Drive firmly for 15 minutes. Watch for the engine management light and sudden power loss. Turbo and boost solenoid issues appear when hot.
