Mainstream European compact from the mid-2000s, sold in huge numbers as a sensible family hatch. The 1.4 Twinport (Z14XEP) is a simple naturally aspirated petrol with a chain-driven valvetrain, modest 90 hp output, and very cheap parts availability across Europe. Common ownership concerns are timing chain stretch on neglected examples, oil consumption with age, electric power steering column failures, and well-known rust on rear wheel arches and sills.· more· less

Common Problems
Mechanically simple but age-sensitive
The Z14XEP is fundamentally a robust little engine and parts are cheap, but every Astra H is now at least 15 years old. Cars with documented annual oil changes, no rust on the rear arches, and quiet cold starts can still be very dependable daily drivers. Cars with no service history, dashboard warnings, or visible corrosion are best avoided unless the price reflects the work needed.

Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Takata airbag inflator (2005-2013 Astra H) Critical - verify completed
Column Integration Module service action (2004-2010) Verify if applicable
Manual gearbox clutch judder (2005-2009 Astra) Verify if applicable
Contact Opel with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed. The Takata airbag campaign is the most important and is a free repair regardless of the car's age.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years) Expired on all Astra H
Rust perforation warranty (6-12 years) Expired on all Astra H
All Astra H models are well outside both their original 2-year factory warranty and their 6-12 year rust perforation warranty. Used-car dealer warranties of 6-12 months are common in Western Europe and are worth asking about, but they typically exclude wear items.
