2015-2020 · 2.2 CRDi D4HB (200 hp) 4-cylinder turbodiesel, 6-speed automatic or manual

The third-generation Sorento brought Kia firmly into the mainstream SUV market with a well-equipped, spacious seven-seater at a competitive price. The 2.2 CRDi D4HB diesel produces 200 hp and 441 Nm, available with either a 6-speed manual or 6-speed torque converter automatic, mostly paired with all-wheel drive. Kia's 7-year / 150,000 km warranty is a significant draw, though most UM models are now approaching or past their warranty expiry.

7-year warranty, best in segment Strong and proven D4HB diesel
Emissions system needs highway use Transfer case spline wear on AWD
Buy if: You want a practical diesel SUV with towing capability and can verify the HECU and PTC heater recalls have been completed.
Avoid if: The car has been used primarily for short urban trips, or there is no evidence of regular AWD system fluid changes.

Common Problems
Reliable diesel but emissions system demands regular highway use
The D4HB engine in the UM Sorento is fundamentally robust, and many examples exceed 200,000 km without major mechanical failures. The main ownership risks center around the emissions system (EGR, DPF) which requires regular motorway driving, the AWD transfer case which needs fluid changes every 40,000-60,000 km, and two safety recalls (HECU fire risk and PTC heater) that must be verified as completed. Post-facelift 2017+ models benefit from improved DPF management software and steering updates. Manual gearbox cars should have the DMF condition assessed.
Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
HECU/ABS module brake fluid leak with fire risk (2014-2020 models) Critical - verify completed
PTC auxiliary heater connector overheating risk (2014-2020 diesel models) Verify completed
Tow-bar electronic control module software (2015-2016 models) Verify completed
MDPS steering ECU software upgrade (produced Oct 2014 - Aug 2017) Verify completed
Seat belt buckle latch assembly, front passenger (selected 2016 models) Verify if applicable
The HECU fire risk recall is particularly critical and affects a wide range of production dates. Contact a Kia dealer with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed. Do not purchase any UM Sorento without confirming the HECU recall status.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (7 years / 150,000 km) 2015-2018 models expired or expiring; 2019-2020 models may have remaining coverage
MDPS extended warranty 15 years / 150,000 miles if warning light illuminates
Rust perforation warranty (12 years) Valid until 2027-2032 depending on build date
Kia's 7-year / 150,000 km warranty is transferable to subsequent owners and is the longest in the segment. Most 2015-2018 UM Sorentos are now outside warranty coverage, but 2019-2020 models may still have 1-2 years remaining. Verify warranty status with a Kia dealer using the VIN.

Skoda Kodiaq 2.0 TDI 2017-2024 Similar size seven-seater with proven EA288 diesel. DSG mechatronics and AdBlue are its weak points. Generally lower running costs but only 2-year warranty. Kia Sorento XM 2.2 CRDi 2009-2014 Previous generation with same D4HB engine. Simpler emissions system and lower purchase price, but more age-related wear and higher fuel pump contamination risk. Toyota Land Cruiser J150 3.0 D-4D 2009-2021 More expensive to buy and maintain but significantly more durable drivetrain. Better off-road capability and stronger residual values.
