Kia EV3 Long Range Mk1

The ICCU converts high-voltage DC from the main battery to 12V for the car's auxiliary systems. The EV3 uses the same 400V E-GMP ICCU architecture that has caused documented failures across Kia EV6, Hyundai Ioniq 5, and other models. Symptoms include the car refusing to AC charge, sudden loss of drive power, or a completely dead 12V system. One EV3 owner reported two ICCU failures within 7 weeks. AC charging is typically affected first, with the unit reducing from 7 kW to around 1.5 kW before failing completely. DC fast charging usually continues to work even when the ICCU is failing. The part costs approximately €1,200-1,500 including labor, though full dealer replacement can reach €2,500. Critically, Kia and Hyundai have extended the ICCU warranty in Germany to 15 years / 300,000 km, and similar programs are expected across Europe. For most used EV3 buyers, the ICCU should remain under warranty coverage.

Multiple owners report frozen infotainment screens, Bluetooth pairing failures, and sluggish touch response. The February 2026 OTA update addressed many of these issues with improved stability and refined phone projection. Some cars have also had the MY DRIVE settings section missing entirely, preventing drive mode selection until a software update was applied. Most software issues are resolved via OTA updates at no cost. In rare cases where the OTA update itself fails or bricks the system, a dealer visit for manual reflashing is needed, typically under warranty. Budget €100-200 for a dealer software intervention if outside warranty.

The EV3 draws continuous power from the 12V battery for its electronic systems. Owners report the main battery losing approximately 1% per day when parked, and the 12V system can drain within 2-3 weeks if the car is not driven or plugged in. Contributing factors include the Kia Connect app keeping the car awake, key fobs stored too close to the vehicle, and devices left plugged into USB ports. The built-in charging cycle runs at least once every 24 hours to top up the 12V battery from the main pack, but this can fail if the main battery state of charge is very low. A replacement 12V battery costs €150-300 at a dealer. Using a quality trickle charger during long storage periods prevents the issue entirely.

The EV3's flush door handles use electric motors to extend when the car is unlocked. Some owners report handles failing to pop out, lacking backlight illumination at night, or becoming intermittent in cold weather. The issue is traced to either the handle assembly switch circuit or the motor mechanism itself. Repair involves replacing the complete door handle assembly. Labor and diagnostics typically cost €100-150, with the handle assembly adding €100-350 depending on the trim level. Higher trim models (GT-Line S) with auto-presenting handles are more susceptible. This issue is covered under the standard warranty.

A recurring complaint on early EV3 production cars. The most common rattle comes from the rear hatch area, traced to loose rubber stops, the boot lock mechanism, or trim panels at the top of the rear windscreen glass. Dashboard and door panel rattles have also been reported, sometimes from speaker housings vibrating on uneven roads. Some owners have needed a new boot lock to resolve the noise, with waits of several weeks for replacement parts. Road noise is also noted as above average, partly due to the tall 215/55R18 tire profile. Most rattle fixes are performed under warranty. Outside warranty, trim clip and rubber stop repairs are inexpensive (under €100), while a boot lock replacement can cost €150-300.

A specific symptom of early ICCU degradation. Many owners report their EV3 starting AC charging at the expected 7.2 kW on a home wallbox, then dropping dramatically to 1.4-1.5 kW after approximately 45-60 minutes. The issue appears limited to single-phase AC charging, which covers the vast majority of European home chargers. DC fast charging remains unaffected. Kia has released an ICCU firmware update (recall code 250036) which resolves the issue in some cases. If the firmware update fails, a full ICCU hardware replacement is required, costing €1,200-1,500. Given the extended ICCU warranty program, most owners will have this covered at no cost.
