Kia Niro Hybrid 2016-2022 Same body, different drivetrain. Hybrid has DCT gearbox issues not present in the EV. Lower purchase price. Hyundai Kona Electric 64 kWh 2018-2023 Identical drivetrain and battery. Same reduction gear and motor issues. Kona had a separate battery recall for fire risk. Volkswagen ID.3 Pro 58 kWh 2020-present More software and build quality issues. Higher risk range but more modern platform with faster charging. Kia EV6 Long Range AWD 2021-present Newer 800V platform with faster charging. More expensive but fewer early reliability concerns than the e-Niro. Nissan Leaf e+ 62 kWh 2019-2023 Simpler and cheaper. No active battery cooling means faster degradation in warm climates. Slower charging.
Known Issues most common first
Reduction gear bearing wear €400 - 3,000
Internal bearings in the reduction gearbox degrade, causing progressive whirring/rumbling noise · more· less
The single-speed reduction gearbox shares a known issue with the Hyundai Kona Electric and Ioniq Electric. A loosely retained internal magnet sheds particles into the gear oil, accelerating bearing wear. About 95% of these cars show pitch-black gear oil when changed, though not all develop audible symptoms. When bearings fail, a progressive whirring noise appears that worsens over time. Kia has acknowledged this as a manufacturing-related issue but has not issued a formal recall. A bearing-only repair kit costs around €200 plus labour (total approximately €400-800 at a specialist). If the motor and gearbox both need replacement at a dealer, costs can reach €2,500-3,000. Preventive gear oil changes every 30,000 km are recommended but not in the standard service schedule. Covered under Kia's EV drivetrain warranty (7 years / 150,000 km in the EU).
PTC heater failure €800 - 4,000
Cabin heater element fails, producing no heat in winter — mainly affects 2020 models · more· less
A batch of PTC heater elements manufactured before July 2020 had a defect rate that led to complete heater failure. Symptoms include no cabin heating, reduced defogging capability, and occasional warning lights. The PTC heater unit itself costs approximately €2,500-3,500 for the part, with labour adding several hundred euros due to dashboard access requirements. Many affected cars were repaired under warranty. Post-2020 production cars received an updated heater unit. If buying a 2020 model, verify whether the heater has been replaced. Out of warranty, this is one of the most expensive potential repairs on the e-Niro.
Battery coolant crystallization €200 - 500
Blue BSC1 coolant crystallizes inside battery cooling circuit, triggering warning lights · more· less
The original BSC1 blue coolant used in 2019-2021 e-Niros can form crystals inside the battery cooling pipes over time. This triggers a 'Refill Inverter Coolant' warning on the dashboard even when coolant levels are adequate. Kia issued a service action (not a safety recall) to flush and replace the coolant with updated BSC2 fluid that does not crystallize. The flush procedure requires a specialist machine at a Kia dealer. Cost is typically €200-500 if not covered. Many dealers performed this as goodwill or under the service action. Verify with the VIN whether this service action has been completed.
12V battery drain €100 - 250
Auxiliary 12V battery drains if the car sits unused for extended periods · more· less
The e-Niro's 12V battery can drain in as little as two weeks if the car is not driven or charged. The standard Rocket-brand lead-acid battery fitted from the factory is considered weak by many owners. Contributing factors include the Kia Connect telematics system maintaining a connection, and the BMS occasionally failing to top up the 12V battery from the main pack. A BMS software update can improve the charging behaviour. Replacement with a quality AGM battery (€120-250 fitted) largely resolves the issue. Some owners fit a trickle charger for extended parking periods.
Rear brake caliper wiring loom failure €150 - 400
Electronic parking brake wiring degrades, triggering brake warning lights · more· less
The wiring loom running to the rear brake calipers can chafe or corrode, particularly on early 2019-2020 production cars. This causes the electronic parking brake to malfunction and triggers warning lights on the dashboard. The repair involves replacing the wiring harness to the affected caliper. Most cases have been repaired under warranty. Out of warranty, the cable and labour cost approximately €150-400 depending on the dealer.
Charging flap actuator sticking €100 - 350
Charging port door refuses to open or close, especially in cold weather · more· less
The electrically operated charging port flap can stick, particularly in cold or wet conditions. Moisture ingress and lack of lubrication on the hinge and latch mechanism are the usual causes. Applying silicone grease to the hinge prevents recurrence in most cases. If the electric actuator itself fails, replacement costs around €200-350 at a dealer. A temporary workaround involves locking and unlocking the car to reset the mechanism.
EPCU coolant leak (2020 models) €0 (recall)
Improper sealing of the Electronic Power Control Unit may allow internal coolant leakage · more· less
A recall (EU Rapex 18/2023) affects e-Niros and Soul EVs manufactured between June and December 2020 — approximately 7,120 vehicles worldwide. The EPCU may leak coolant onto its internal circuit board, causing a loss of drive power. No fires have been reported. The recall remedy is a dealer inspection and EPCU replacement if leakage is found, at no cost. Always verify with a Kia dealer using the VIN that this recall has been completed before purchase.
Very reliable for an EV, with a few known but manageable issues
The e-Niro is one of the most reliable EVs on the market. Battery degradation is minimal even at high mileages, and the electric motor is fundamentally robust. The main concerns — reduction gear bearings and PTC heater — are well-documented and often caught under Kia's generous 7-year warranty. Cars bought used with remaining warranty have a significant safety net. Out of warranty, the reduction gear and heater are the only potentially expensive repairs.
Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
+ 4 more checksShow less
  • Check charging flap operation
Open and close the charging port door several times. It should respond immediately when you press the button on the key fob or dashboard.
  • Check battery state of health via OBD scan
Use a compatible OBD reader to check the BMS-reported state of health. Note that the e-Niro's BMS rarely reports below 100%, so a reading below 95% warrants further investigation.
  • Verify EPCU recall status (2020 production)
Cars built June-December 2020 are affected by the EPCU coolant leak recall. Contact Kia with the VIN to confirm completion.
  • Check for remaining warranty
Kia's 7-year warranty transfers to subsequent owners. Calculate remaining coverage from first registration date. EV drivetrain warranty is separate and may extend longer.
